Give a Star!
The Planetarium at the College of Southern Nevada offers to its patrons the opportunity to dedicate a star to a person. The official procedures for naming stars have been established by the International Astronomical Union in Paris, France. Their policy does not include the use of people's names in designating stars. The only exception is for unusual stars which may be named for their discoverers. Organizations that purport to name stars for individuals have no offical standing in the scientific community.
There are no restrictions, however, on the dedication of stars to individuals. For a donation of $35.00, The Planetarium will provide an attractive certificate that proclaims your dedication of the star of your choice to another person. The certificate will include a chart of the constellation containing the star and complete information about the star. Accompanying the certificate will be The Sky Challenger which contains a series of adjustable charts of the sky which will help you find your star from anywhere in North America at any time of the year.
To complete the gift package, the person receiving the dedication will be entered on our rolls as a Friend of the Planetarium for one year. All Friends receive our monthly magazine, onOrbit, discount admissions to all presentations at The Planetarium and a 10% discount on all merchandise in The Astronomy Store.
You may choose a star yourself or we will choose an appropriate star for you. If you are not sure of which star, you can suggest a constellation or a season when the star should be visible in the evening sky.
