ADMISSION INFORMATION
Open Door Policy
The admissions policies of the Nevada System of Higher
Education (NSHE) were developed in order to ensure a
foundation of knowledge and competencies which will
allow a student to successfully pursue and attain an aca-
demic degree. The Community College of Southern Nevada
(CCSN) subscribes to an “open-door" policy of admitting
all high school graduates or non-graduates who are capable
of profiting from postsecondary education. Students with a
General Equivalency Diploma (GED) are considered equiv-
alent to high school graduates.
Who May Be Admitted- Students will qualify for admis-
sion to CCSN if they are either:
• A U.S. citizen or immigrant and are 18 years of age or
older, or a graduate of a high school or equivalent, and
• Qualified under the CCSN “open-door" policy and
meet the residency requirements and can profit from
the program, or
• A qualified high school student
Students must also provide certain information, complete
any preliminary testing and meet deadlines. Admissions to
Limited Entry programs require additional criteria.
High school juniors and seniors, or those receiving equiv-
alent instruction, may be admitted and may enroll at CCSN,
subject to the approval of appropriate high school and
College officials. High school juniors and seniors who are
Career and Technical Education Program Completers may
be admitted when written agreements with the Clark
County School District exist.
High school students below junior level, or those receiv-
ing equivalent instruction, when identified as academically
talented by the School District and recommended by their
high school principal will be reviewed on a case by case
basis for enrollment in credit courses. Otherwise, high
school students below the junior level may enroll in non-
credit, Community and Personal Enrichment courses.
International Students who meet international student
qualifications may also be admitted.
Admission of Nonresident Students- (See Residency
Policy under Appendix B)
General Admission Procedures CCSN’s “Students First
Program"- CCSN believes in putting student success first.
Our students deserve the opportunity to start college on the
right track. To accomplish this, new students seeking a
degree or certificate and transfer students will begin college
following these steps:
1. Fill out an Admission Form (on CCSN webpage).
You are also encouraged to complete a Financial Aid
Application at www.fafsa.ed.gov
2. Complete a “Student Success Orientation" (on CCSN
webpage).
3. Complete a placement test for English, Mathematics
and Reading (at a Testing Center).
4. Meet with a College counselor (from the Counseling
Department) to remove the registration HOLD and to
select the correct classes for the degree, certificate, or
transfer path you have chosen.
Exception: New students interested in a Limited
Entry Health Science Program, must attend a Health
Programs Orientation through the Division of Health
Science in order to have your Hold removed. Please
call (702) 651-5015 for dates, times, and locations.
New students interested in an Open-Entry
Certificate of Achievement must visit the Health
Advisement Office at the West Charleston (Bldg. B)
or Cheyenne campus (room 1219) in order to have
your Hold removed. To determine whether your pro-
gram of interest is a Limited Entry or Open entry
Certificate of Achievement visit:

5. Register for the appropriate classes (on CCSN web
page or in person).
All new CCSN degree-seeking, certificate or transfer
students should plan on completing steps one, two,
three, and four before registering for classes.
The “Students First Program" will include follow-up
assistance from Faculty Advisors in your area of interest.
Also, CCSN Counselors will be available to meet with you
periodically to assist you in deciding what career path is
right for you and to insure you are on the right track toward
your educational goal.
New students transferring into CCSN who want credit for
classes completed at another institution counted toward a
CCSN certificate or degree must request that the institution
send an official transcript directly to the Office of the
Registrar and request a transfer credit evaluation form. An
official evaluation of credits will not be initiated until this
form is completed and submitted. A copy of the transfer
credit evaluation will be available on the CCSN webpage,
and you will be notified when it is completed. Please allow
four to six weeks for processing.
Special Admission Information for Health Sciences
Programs- Students seeking admission to one of the Health
Sciences Programs should be aware that there are several
additional procedures and policies. Some Health Sciences
Programs are designated “limited entry," meaning that class
sizes are limited. Prospective students must submit an appli-
cation to the Limited Entry Office and be selected to a pro-
gram in order to register for classes in limited entry pro-
grams. Information on admissions, selection procedures and
application deadlines is available through the Health
Sciences Programs Advisement Office, located on the
Charleston and Cheyenne campuses. Students must attend a
Health Sciences Program orientation to obtain detailed
information on the limited entry application process and
programs. In additionthere are immunization requirements
for these programs.
