HOLIDAY GREETINGS!

I invite all the college community to enjoy CCSN's unique Traveling Holiday Open House on Tuesday, Dec 18 at all three main campuses: for brunch at Henderson in C Bldg's Café.com from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.; for tea at Charleston in the Administrative Offices, room D315 from 1:30 until 3:30 p.m.; and at Cheyenne in Russell's Restaurant from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. for hors d'oeuvres.

Come to any or all three to meet your colleagues and friends and celebrate the spirit of the season - and the spirit of CCSN that enriches the lives of those we teach. You truly deserve to enjoy these festivities and the holiday season as a well-deserved break in the dynamic pace of education at Nevada's largest institution of higher learning.

As CCSN marks the end of another successful semester and the beginning of a new year of more challenges and advancements, you have worked to unify this college as I hoped when I became your president in July. For your dedicated hard work and the welcoming hand of support you extended me, I wish you and your loved ones every joy, happiness, and health for the New Year - and I look forward to celebrating with you at our open house events.

IN THE NEWS

Regents Raise Admission Standards
After two months' debate and two public hearings, the Board of Regents acted last week to increase admissions standards at UNLV and UNR. According to the revised policy, the universities will increase minimum grade point average requirement for incoming freshman from 2.5 to 2.75 starting in fall 2006. The GPA will then increase to 3.0 by fall 2010. The revised proposal also called for weighted GPAs to be used when calculating student GPAs. The weighted GPA will only include core curriculum courses, not electives.

Students not meeting the admission criteria will receive simultaneous admission to the university and to a program at a Nevada two-year college. This will allow students to enroll at a university after completing a comprehensive transfer program.

Students with an associate's degree are automatically eligible for admission to Nevada universities. Effective in fall 2006, students transferring to UNLV or UNR must have earned at least 24 semester credits at another academic institution, double the current minimum 12 credits, as well as attained a 2.3 GPA. By fall 2010, the transfer GPA will rise to 2.5.

Although the Board approved these revised policies, a final amendment to the Regents' handbook will be presented and voted on at the January meeting. I will be consulting with our academic and administrative faculty to prepare for these inevitable changes.

UNLV and UNR will conduct impact studies in spring 2008 to determine the effect the revised policies have on students and make any necessary changes.

Nevada's Largest Student Body
For Fall 2001, CCSN enrolled 33,364 students, a 2.2 percent increase over Fall 2000. FTE (full-time equivalency) jumped 6 percent to 15,266 students over last fall. Our student body FTE is 82 percent greater than the three northern Nevada community colleges combined and 6.4 percent higher (over 900 students more) than UNLV's undergraduate FTE.
Student Government Funds Reallocated
The Board of Regents voted to reduce the discretionary funding of CCSN student government from $535,000 to $230,000 per year. The action reduces student government funding from $2 per enrollment credit hour to 50 cents. The $1.50 portion will go into CCSN's General Improvement Fee. This will enable the college administration, in concert with student representatives, faculty and staff, to work together on projects that support students. The General Improvement Fee can be used to sustain projects such as tutorial services, disabled students programs, transportation initiatives, childcare resources, lab support and other projects that improve the quality of student learning.
Sweet Deal
Hats off to our casino management program and casino lab director Paul Flowers for handing laid off casino workers a sweet deal. For 90 days, our lab has been open to displaced workers to help them learn new games or practice their skills to find new employment.

Digging Starts
In preparation for the start of construction for the new $17 million Sciences Center at Charleston, the cross campus drive south of the D Bldg is now closed, along with a number of nearby paved and unpaved parking areas. The closure is permanent since the land will not only be part of the site under construction, but will also become new campus walkways and a desert demonstration garden. The only remaining cross-campus drive is north of the A Bldg. Everyone is asked to drive carefully and park friendly as we expand.
