Department of Social Sciences Discipline Descriptions
Economics Program
The Department of Social Sciences offers a variety of general education economics courses, including: Introduction to Microeconomics, Introduction to Macroeconomics, and Principles of Statistics. These courses are designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills that are essential for success in a complex and diverse world. The department also offers an Associate of Arts degree with an emphasis in Financial Economics. The Financial Economics program offers students a variety of courses designed to train professionals in the field of personal finance.
Global Studies Program
This new interdisciplinary program within the Department of Social Sciences offers students an opportunity to understand issues and events from a global perspective. In a wide variety of courses across numerous disciplines, they will have an opportunity to gain an understanding of global social, economic, political, and historical systems which are anchored in the differing philosophical and religious traditions. The Global Studies program offers students an opportunity to explore how people with diverse values and traditions face important global issues. They will learn how to apply critical thinking to analysis of global issues or events and offer solutions to them using logical and consistent written or oral arguments from a variety of sides. In the process, they will come to understand the interconnectedness of global events.
History Program
The Department of Social Sciences offers a wide range of history courses: including survey courses in US History, Nevada History, Western Civilization, and specialized courses that reflect the wide variety of faculty expertise within the department. In all these courses, students will learn how past development have shaped present-day societies. They will also learn how to think analytically and understand and analyze various historical interpretations. In addition, the program is designed to fulfill the mandate that all baccalaureate degree earners from Nevada System of Higher Education institutions demonstrate familiarity with national and state history.
Philosophy Program
The Department of Social Sciences offers students a variety of general education and more specialized course, from Critical Thinking and Reasoning to Environmental Ethics. These courses provide students the opportunity to develop analytical tools to examine their world and their position in it. The reasoning and critical thinking skills acquired through philosophical study benefit student as they continue their studies, make important decisions, meet civic responsibilities, and pursue chosen careers.
Political Science Program
The Political Science program offers students the opportunity to examine the workings of the United States and Nevada governments, explore the political culture of the United States and the world, and develop citizenship skills. It is also designed to fulfill the mandate that all baccalaureate degree earners from the Nevada System of Higher Education institutions demonstrate familiarity with national and state government. Introduction to American Politics provides a basic survey of national, state, and local governments, while more specialized courses, from Terrorism and Political Violence to Organized Crime and Political Corruption, offer more in-depth focus in selected areas.
Women’s Studies Program
In a variety of courses, from Introduction to Women's Studies to the History of Witchcraft, the Women’s Studies program examines the historical and contemporary issues of gender, drawing from economics, history, psychology, sociology, laws and language. Students will learn how gender shapes human consciousness and has determined the social, economic, political and cultural organization of human society throughout history. Women’s Studies are committed to the development of thinking and writing skills. Students who earn an AA with a Women’s Studies emphasis will have an enhanced understanding of interpersonal relations in a work or business setting. They will complete a program designed to make them academically well-rounded and that will give them advantages when applying to and completing a baccalaureate program.
