SING at CSN!

The vocal music program at the College of Southern Nevada provides instruction for a wide variety of abilities, from the college music major, to students seeking personal enrichment through singing, to working professionals on the Strip getting ready for their audition. Opportunities exist for individual instruction, voice class and choral ensembles. The following is a description of each vocal class which is offered at CSN. Let yourself SING!

MUS 153 Private vocal instruction - Arranged  (1 credit)

This course consists of 15 half hour lessons given each week of the semester. The student will be placed with an instructor the first week of the semester depending on their singing experience and ability. Lesson times are arranged by the student and the voice teacher.

Private lessons at the CSN are the most economical vocal instruction a person can find in Las Vegas when considering time, cost and level of instruction. All of the adjunct voice faculty at CSN have advanced degrees in music and each maintains an active performing career in their field, be it opera, musical theater or jazz.

Students taking private lessons may perform on the Thursday afternoon Student/Faculty recitals if they wish.

MUS 113 Voice Class - Mon/Wed, 11:00 to 12:20  (3 credits)

Voice Class is group vocal instruction. Students will learn the fundamentals of singing, including respiration, phonation, resonation and articulation. Sight reading skills will also be taught, as well as performance techniques.

The advantage to this type of class is that students are singing for an hour twice a week with an instructor monitoring their progress. They are also able to hear how other students vocal technique is progressing through the course of the semester.

MUS 111 College Singers - Thursday, 6:30 to 8:30  (1 credit)

College Singers is open to anyone who wishes to sing. The choir consists of 60% college students and 40% members of the community. The ages of the members vary widely from high school students to retirees.

This ensemble performs a variety of literature including major works with orchestra. Past performances by the College Singers have included the Vivaldi Gloria, FaurŽ Requiem and Handel's Messiah.

MUS 116 Chamber Choir - Mon/Wed, 12:30 to 1:50  (1 credit)

The Chamber Choir is a select ensemble which performs works for small vocal ensembles from each of the representative musical time periods. Students in this ensemble are expected to have some ensemble singing experience.

This past year a busy one for the Chamber Choir. In the fall they performed at the UNLV Chamber Choir Festival. In the spring of 2002 the Chamber Singers performed on Carnival Cruise Line's "Ecstacy" as a part of the spring choir tour. The highlight of the year was performing four sold out performances with Barry Manilow at Mandalay Bay. In addition to live performances, the Chamber Choir records each semester in the CSN recording studio.

Auditions for this ensemble are held during the first day of classes.

MUS 115 Vocal Jazz Ensemble - Tues/Thurs, 12:30 to 1:50  (1 credit)

The CSN Jazz Singers is also a select ensemble. This group maintains an active performing schedule throughout the Las Vegas Valley and is accompanied by a professional rhythm section. Students in this ensemble are expected to have some ensemble singing experience. Solo opportunities are also available.

The Jazz Singers have performed on the Carnival Cruiseship "Ecstacy" with the Chamber choir and joined them for the performances with Barry Manilow at Mandalay Bay. This ensemble has previously performed with the legendary Joe Williams and Robert Goulet.
