Academics

 About the Program

The Hospitality Management Department of the College of Southern Nevada provides contemporary hospitality education to working adults, traditional college students, and learners from a variety of states and many international communities.

The Hospitality Management Department offers Associate Degrees and Certificate Programs in the areas of Casino Management, Culinary Arts, Pastry Arts, Food and Beverage Management, Hotel Management and Travel and Tourism.

The department includes seventeen full-time faculty members, a kitchen manager, a casino lab manager, a purchasing/control manager, a staff of six kitchen workers, and two administrative assistants. All faculty members are required to have a minimum of five years of professional management experience in their area of specialization and college and university credentials ranging from Associate Degrees to Doctoral Degrees. Many faculty also maintain professional certifications from outside professional organizations. These certifications range from Certified Sous Chef to Certified Executive Chef to Certified Master Pastry Chef with the American Culinary Federation; Certified Hospitality Educator with the American Hotel/Lodging Association; and Certified Food Educator and Food Management Professional with the National Restaurant Association.

The Hospitality Management Department has achieved a seven year accreditation with the prestigious Council for Accreditation of Hospitality Management Programs.  The Culinary Arts Program, the Pastry Arts Programs and the Food and Beverage Management Program have an additional seven year accreditation from the American Culinary Federation.  Additionally, the Department utilizes top professionals from the local Resort and Gaming Industry as part-time faculty in many areas.

The department and its students have received much national recognitions. Our students have traveled across the country and around  the globe participating in numerous culinary competitions. Most recently a team of our students apprenticed to Team Las Vegas at the International Culinary Olympics in Germany where team Las Vegas received a silver medal. Our culinary teams have represented the state of Nevada many times in the past and have traveled to the national culinary competitions where they twice have won national titles and numerous gold, silver and bronze medals.

Graduates have received positions in many hotels and casinos in the Las Vegas Resort and Gaming Community and many have moved into prestigious supervisory positions. Often graduates continue their education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and elsewhere to further their goals of being a professional leader in the Resort and Gaming Industry here and around the world.

Scholarship Opportunities

The cost of an education includes more than just course tuition and lab fees. Textbooks, study aids, equipment, and supplies can also be a significant part of preparing for your future career.  Fortunately, our students are not alone in the task of financing a quality education.  Both the College and the Hospitality Management Department are privileged to have numerous scholarships available to students willing to apply.  Unlike student loans that require repayment with often strict guidelines, scholarships typically don't have to be repaid as long as the terms of the college and the donating agent are met.  Many scholarships are available to our entire student population.

Don't miss out on the opportunity to receive a scholarship to help fund your education. For questions about departmental scholarships please contact Professor Joseph Quagliano.
