About the Program
The Hospitality Management Department of the College of Southern Nevada serves the purpose of providing high quality hospitality education to the students of the college, who include local students of all ages and a significant number of students from other states and many international communities.
The Hospitality Management Department offers Associate Degrees and Certificate Programs in the areas of Casino Management, Culinary and Pastry Arts, Food and Beverage Management, Hotel Management and Travel and Tourism. In addition a new Concierge program is under development and is awaiting final approval to begin offering classes in Spring of 2007.
The department now includes seventeen full-time faculty members, two administrative assistants, a kitchen manager, a casino lab manager, a purchasing/control manager and a staff of six kitchen workers. All faculty members are required to have a minimum of five years of professional management experience in their area of specialization plus college and university degrees ranging from Associate Degrees to Doctoral Degrees. Many of the faculty also have and maintain professional certifications from outside professional organizations. These certifications range from Certified Sous Chef to Certified Executive Chef to Certified Master Pastry Chef with the American Culinary Federation; Certified Hospitality Educator with the American Hotel/Motel Association; Certified Food Educator and Food Management Professional with the National Restaurant Association.
The Department has a seven year accreditation with the prestigious Council for Accreditation of Hospitality Management Programs and the Culinary Arts Program, the Pastry Arts Programs and the Food and Beverage Management Program have an additional seven year accreditation from the American Culinary Federation. In addition the Department utilizes top professionals from the local Resort and Gaming Industry as adjunct faculty in many areas.
The department and its students have received many honors and awards, locally, regionally and on the national level in various areas. Our students have traveled across the globe participating in numerous competitions. Most recently a team of our students apprenticed to Team Las Vegas at the International Culinary Olympics in Germany where team Las Vegas received a silver medal. Our culinary teams have represented the state of Nevada many times in the past and have traveled to the national culinary competitions where they twice have won national titles and numerous gold, silver and bronze medals.
Graduates have received positions in every hotel and casino in the Las Vegas Resort and Gaming Community and many have moved into prestigious supervisory positions. Many of our students continue their education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and elsewhere to further their goals of being a professional leader in the Resort and Gaming Industry here and around the world.
