COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Basic accounting principles and techniques with special emphasis on sole proprietorships and partnerships, the complete accounting cycle, special journals, payables, receivables, depreciation, inventories, and financial statement preparation. Students will learn the use of Angel, allowing access to course information and instructor/student email.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: GENERAL
1. Provide a strong foundation for subsequent courses in business and finance
2. Initiate course work leading to a career in accounting
COURSE OBJECTIVES: - Specific
1. Familiarization with specialized terminology used in business and accounting.
2. Record business transactions in journal form.
3. Post journal entries to ledger accounts.
4. Prepare and record adjusting, closing, reversing entries.
5. Prepare a trial balance, work sheet, and financial statements.
6. Reconcile a bank statement.
7. Account for receivables, payables, notes, and interest.
8. Account for inventories.
9. Compute and account for depreciation.
10. Account for disposition of plant assets.
11. Compute and record a payroll.
12. Demonstrate knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
13. Account for partnership formation, division of income, and liquidation.
EVALUATION:
Grades will be determined by the student's performance on chapter exams, homework assignments, and discussion board postings. Each exam chapter exam will be worth 30 points and there are two exams for each chapter for a total of 720 on graded exam points. Assignments will also have a combined possible score of 60 points. The discussion posting will amount to 60 points, and participation in a written paper with a score of 60 points. The maximum number of total points for the course is 900.
Written Accounting Paper (60 points) - This paper will consist of 2 pages double spaced with 10 font. It may be done on an accounting topic of interest. Send me an email with your ideas for a paper topic and we will discuss. A paper may not be submitted without gaining approval of the topic before starting the work. ( A couple of paper ideas to get you started; History of Accounting, Sarbanies Oxley Act, Off balance sheet transactions )

6/6 – First Day of class – 1st Assignment is to send me an email with a personal profile about yourself. This may be in written, facebook location, or personal webpage format. Begin working on Chapter 1 materials. (Textbook homework assignments are listed above and within the Angel course calendar.
Chapter 1, Profile, due June 19th.
(Items that are due for each chapters work include: Textbook homework, 2 graded exams per chapter, and the written accounting paper project) Make sure to get working on your topic for the final paper.
