Elfie Manning
has been with the College of Southern Nevada for almost 15 years where she serves as Professor and Lead Faculty of French and German. She has taught 14 previous years English as a Second Language to the royal family of Saudi Arabia, French and German at Lansing Community College in Michigan, French at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC and at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR, ESL to the German military, French and German at the University of California, Riverside, German at Riverside City College and Crafton Hills College in California, ESL, French, German and Latin for the Riverside Unified School District, and ESL and German at Université Paul Valéry in Montpellier, France.
She received her college-preparatory education in Germany, her A.A. in Foreign Languages from the College of the Desert, Palm Desert, CA, her B.A. in German and French from the University of California, Riverside, CA, a "Licence" in French and Comparative Literature from the Université Paul Valéry, Montpellier, France (Thesis: "Le Thème du Diable dans les "Elixirs du Diable" d'E.T.A. Hoffmann."), her M.A. in Comparative Literature (English, French, German) from the University of California, Riverside, CA (Thesis: "Poetry as a Political Tool") and has done post-Master's studies at the University of California, Riverside and at UNLV as well as the Sorbonne, Paris, France and Ruprecht-Karls Universität, Heidelberg, Germany.
For many years she directed summer study abroad programs to Québec and Montréal, Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
She has received numerous grants to further her studies of languages in such places as Granada, Spain, Québec and Montréal, Canada, Düsseldorf, Germany and Strasbourg, France.
She further has received independent scholar grants to host a seminar for French for Tourism, Hotel and Restaurant Management at CSN, the CSN Foundation Grant to host German teachers of Nevada on language lab hardware and software, the Greenspun Technology Grant for Business French and German software, the Foreign Language Lab Capital Improvement Grant at CSN, the NCSU Grant to supply language lab with satellite technology and computers, the NCSU grant in Instructional Computing, the OSU College of Liberal Arts grant to upgrade language lab with computer technology, and the OSU Cooperative Education Internship Grant to develop foreign language internships with international companies.
She has presented numerous lectures and seminars around the world on such topics as "French for the Tourism, Hotel, and Restaurant Industry" (in Martinique), on Language Lab Technology, Suggestology and Sophrology and the Natural Approach, Business French and German, Computers in Foreign Language Instruction.
She has served on many college and university committees as either a member or chair. She was the 1997-98 recipient of the "Outstanding Faculty Award" at CSN and has been nominated twice since then. In 2001 she received the "Outstanding Faculty for Higher Education for the Southwestern Region Award" from SWCOLT. She has been nominated by students, cited for their own academic excellence, to be included in "Who's Who Among American Teachers" many times, and "Who's Who in American Education." She was selected by students and faculty to be an Honorary Member of "Alpha Mu Gamma" at CSN.
