YUMA, Ariz. – The College of Southern Nevada softball team opened up their season last Thursday at the Great Western Shootout, hosted by Arizona Western College.
The first two days didn't go too well, with CSN dropping their first four contests. On Thursday, the Coyotes lost 8-5 to Pima Community College (Ariz.) and 14-2 to Eastern Arizona College.
CSN lost a tough one to Glendale (Ariz.) Community College on Friday, losing 3-2 in a game where the Coyotes had multiple opportunities to score late in the game. In their second game, an 8-run fifth inning boasted Salt Lake Community College (Utah) to victory over CSN, 9-2.
Finally, on Saturday, the Coyotes pounded Chandler-Gilbert, 10-3. Christina Jones pitched a complete game to earn the victory, striking out three while getting 12 Chandler-Gilbert batters to ground out. Amy Aicher and UNLV transfer Stacey Burgos both went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs to lead the CSN offense.
In the final game of the tournament, the Coyotes (2-4) stunned previously unbeaten Yavapai College, holding on for a 2-1 victory. Mandy Tapia outdueled Britinie Hardine in the circle for the win. Evelyn Terrazas and Erin Piorkowski each went 2-for-3 to lead the Coyotes. The Roughriders were 9-0 before CSN's improbable win.
Next for the softball team is a trip to California on Presidents' Day weekend to take on Modesto Junior College, College of the Redwoods and Fresno City College.
