For the first time ever, the College of Southern Nevada baseball team participated in the 2008 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on Saturday in Summerlin.

"This was the third year our CSN Coyotes team participated in the walk, and we were more successful than ever," co-team captain Lisa Bakke said.  "We had 115 team members and raised over $9,000 – far exceeding our goal of $7,000."

The annual event is organized by the American Cancer Society, and CSN faculty, staff and students were invited by co-team captains Mary Kaye Bailey and Bakke to join the fight against breast cancer by participating in the 3.5-mile walk and raising funds to sponsor them.

The CSN baseball team's effort was that of a winner, as they raised a total of over $1,600 in pledged and cash donations.

"This was a great opportunity for us to give back to the community," said athletic director Tim Chambers, who also participated in the walk.  "I'm proud of our student-athletes' efforts and participation.  It felt great knowing we contributed as much as we did, all for a great cause."

Some of Chambers' assistant coaches and athletic trainer Steve Jacobucci also participated in the event.

"They’re an awesome group of guys who obviously care about their community," co-team captain Lisa Bakke said.  "It was a beautiful day and the whole team had fun walking for this great cause."

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk is an opportunity for people to make a difference and to raise awareness of this disease that can be deadly.

"We celebrate survivors and walk in honor of those we’ve lost to this horrible disease," Bakke said.  "The money that we have all raised is so important in the fight against breast cancer for research and support programs.

"We truly appreciate our whole CSN Coyotes team for joining together in such an important cause."

Special thanks to Mary Kaye Bailey for the photos.
