Associates of Applied Science in Fire Management

The Associates of Applied Science in Fire Management is designed for the career firefighter who desires to promote into a management or frontline supervision position in a career or volunteer fire department.  Several of the courses require by state mandate an NFPA Firefighter II to enter the course. The core content of the degree is compliant with the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education project from the U.S. Fire Administration and National Fire Academy.  A student completing course work in the Fire Management program can earn certificates in Fire Instructor, Fire Officer I, and Incident Safety Officer.  The course work meets the NFPA 1021 standard for Fire Officer II.   The courses are taught by experienced faculty that has served as battalion chiefs, division chiefs, and front line supervisors in the Las Vegas area’s fire service.  The AAS in Fire Management is transferable to UNLV, Nevada State College, Utah State College, Grand Canyon University, and Cogswells College.
A person wishing to obtain credentials for company officer certification will need to take the following sequence of courses:

  1. FT 190 Fire Instructor I
  2. FT 191 Introduction to Company Officer
  3. FT 243 Tactics and Strategies
  4. FT 247 Incident Safety Officers 

FT 125 Building Construction for the Fire Service is highly recommended to area firefighters that testing for the position of Captain. Independent study or mentored course work for classes to accommodate firefighting in the promotion process is available.  Non-traditional education credit is also available to the career firefighters who have successfully completed accredited course work through the area fire departments and Nevada State Fire Marshall’s Office.  Non-traditional education credit is reviewed and approved by the Fire Programs Coordinator.  A CERTIFICATE AND PROOF of forty hours or more of equivalent instruction must be presented by the student requesting credit.  Time in grade is not available for college credit.  IFSAC sealed certificates receive automatic verification and recognition at CSN.
