CSN Student Email
The Office of Technology Services (OTS) is pleased to present Imail, a full-featured web-based email system for use by students enrolled in for credit courses at CSN. This FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) document is intended for students, faculty and staff to answer some of the most common questions you may have concerning this new system. Q: Who gets an Imail account?
A: All currently enrolled students who are registered for credit courses will be provided with an account.
Q: How do I request an Imail account?
A: Accounts will be created automatically based upon CSN registration data.
Q: How long does it take before my account is created?
A: Once registered for classes for a semester your account is created two weeks before that semester starts. If registering within two weeks of the semester or during the semester you have registered for your account is usually created by 12 noon the next business day after your registration or in some cases after an additional 24 hours due to system transmission timeframes.
Q: What is my login ID and password?
A: Login IDs will follow the format first name “dot” last name and possibly a number sequence after last name if necessary to prevent duplicate IDs. For example, student Jane Doe may have an ID of jane.doe, while John Doe’s ID might be john.doe01.Your initial password will be set when the account is validated. To validate the account visit https://csnstudent.csn.edu/stuverify after it has been created.
Q: What is my email address?
A: Email address will be login ID followed by @students.csn.edu. Example: email@example.com for John.
Q: How would I know if there is a number after my ID?
A: After you have tried your ID and password and you still can’t login, please call the OTS Help Desk (4357). They will verify your identity and provide you with your login ID.
Q: What software do I need to install?
A: None! Imail is web-based, any common web browser such as Explorer, Netscape and Mozilla will work.
Q: Can I get my email at home?
A: Yes, provided you have internet access.
Q: How much mailbox storage space will I have?
A: Current mailbox size is limited to 50 MB. E-mail that is older than 180 days is purged.
Q: How do I access Imail?
A: Type the following URL in your browser’s address line: https://students.csn.edu/ , then enter your login ID and password.
Q: Can I create contacts?
A: Yes, personal contacts and contact lists are supported.
Q: What about SPAM, malware and viruses?
A: Our email server uses SPAM filters and an anti-virus engine that offers carrier class protection for your account. Please note that no system is 100% foolproof and you are cautioned to exercise care in opening email or attachments from an unknown source. Please read the email from OTS User Services when you first login regarding email security and best practices.
Q: How long will my account last?
A: We currently have no plan to retire any active email account; however, we can not guarantee that accounts that are inactive for more than 6 months will remain available. Inactive accounts are subject to removal, including all data stored in the inactive account’s mailbox. Once removed the data is no longer recoverable.
Q: What happens when I reach my mailbox size limit?
A: You will receive a notification in your email mailbox when your account is almost full. Once your account has reached its storage limit you will no longer receive email. We recommend actively managing your account to avoid this possibility.
Q: How does my professor get my email address?
A: Faculty will be provided the student email addresses of all students enrolled in their class.
Q: Are there any restrictions on use?
A: Your email account is intended to be the primary means of electronic communication between CSN and students. You are responsible to use the system in accordance with all CSN policies, as well as NSHE, local, state and federal policies and laws.
Q: How do I change my password?
A: After login, choose Preferences and enter your new password. We strongly recommend that you change your password as soon as possible after your first login.
Q: What if I forget my password?
A: Call the OTS Help Desk at extension 4357.
Q: Do I have to use Imail when I contact CSN or my instructors?
A: This email account is intended as your primary means of electronic communication with CSN.
Q: Is this secure?
A: We use industry standard certificates and SSL (Secure Socket Layer) technology, in addition to anti-virus scanning and SPAM filters to make this system as secure as possible. No system is 100% foolproof, and so we strongly recommend you take an active role to protect your identity – never give important personal information to an unknown or un-trusted source.
