Student Retention Services – For Faculty

Faculty E-Alert System
The Faculty E-Alert warning system allows faculty to identify students early in the term that may benefit from contact by Retention Services.  By using the system you could alert Retention Services of a student who has not been attending class, has demonstrated a need for skills development, or is showing other signs of failure. Please click on the link above connecting you to the Web Grading system where you can proceed to place an E-Alert Referral.

Once you place a referral, please inform the student that you referred him/her to Retention Services. Students are more receptive to accepting services when they are first informed by faculty of the referral.

Student Success Presentations

Faculty may request that a Retention Specialist conduct a classroom presentation to inform students about the resources available at the college and the services provided by our office.

To schedule a presentation, please contact the following staff members for each respective campus with your name, email address, telephone number, course you teach, and time/date/location of class meeting.

West Charleston:          Sharon Allen, Administrative Assistant, sharon.allen@csn.edu, (702) 651-7367
Henderson:                  Angel Clemens, Administrative Assistant, angel.clemens@csn.edu, (702) 651-3103
Cheyenne:                   Vicky Rocha, Administrative Assistant, Vicky.rocha@csn.edu, (702) 651-2626

A Retention Specialist will contact you as his or her earliest opportunity. Several types of classroom presentations are available:

Informational Classroom Presentations

Introductory Presentation:  The typical classroom presentation is between 3 to 5 minutes and includes a very brief overview of the resources and services available at CSN to help students successfully complete their coursework.  Students are informed of the Faculty E-Alert program at this time and of the purpose of this referral program and are also provided with useful written information.  These presentations are typically conducted at the beginning of class and work best if conducted during the first three weeks of the semester.

Mid-semester Presentation:  This classroom presentation is also between 3 to 5 minutes and is aimed at reminding students of the resources and services available to help them succeed.  By this time, students have likely completed several assessments and have a better idea whether they need extra assistance.

Extended Classroom Presentation:  A Retention Specialist can visit your classroom for about ½ hour to give more extensive information about CSN’s services as well as give quick tips for different study techniques that can assist them in successfully completing their coursework.  The presentation can take place at any time during the semester and can be customized to fit the specific needs of the class.

Substitute Workshop for Instructor Absence:  When instructors have a planned absence, faculty can contact the Retention Office to request a Retention Specialist to cover their class. Depending on the specialists’ availability, the Retention Specialist can provide a success skills workshop that targets the needs of the class as determined by the instructor. The workshops can be designed to take all or a portion of the scheduled class time.  The following workshops are available:

·         Test Taking Strategies/Test Anxiety
·         Science Study Skills
·         Math Study Skills
·         Learning Styles
·         Time Management/Work Life Balance
·         Note Taking Strategies
·         Study Strategies for Nursing/Health Programs
·         College Success Factors
