Information for Faculty
Library Instruction Sessions/Workshops
Library Instruction Sessions: Reserve a time for your class to see the many resources available at each CSN campus library. Orientations provide practical skills in the use of both electronic and print resources, and can be tailored to specific subject areas and assignments. Please call your campus library's reference desk (Cheyenne - ext.4419, Henderson - ext. 3039, West Charleston - ext. 5729) to schedule this popular service. As a courtesy, please try to schedule your orientations at least two weeks in advance.
Department Training Workshops: Individual departments are encouraged to arrange a library training session to coincide with one of their department meetings. A librarian will tailor training to the specific needs of the department and will offer ideas on how library resources and services can be used in their courses. To schedule a training session, please call your library's reference desk (Cheyenne - ext. 4419, Henderson - ext. 3039, West Charleston - ext. 5729).
Online Help and Tutorials: The Library has put together a variety of web based tutorials and PDF research guides to assist your students in acquiring the information literacy skills necessary to complete college level research assignments and projects. The following document [PDF] outlines the instructional resources available to your students, and how they might be incorporated into your classes.
Placing Material on Reserve
Reserve materials (articles, videos, old tests, etc.) are those which faculty make available to their students for a particular course. Request forms used for placing material on reserve are available at the circulation desk at each campus library. Personal copies of items may be placed on reserve; however, the library will not assume responsibility in the event of damage or loss. With a valid CSN library card, students may check-out reserve items for 2 hours – to be used in the circulation library only.
Suggest Materials for Campus Library Collections (Books, Videos, DVDs, Etc.)
One of the primary goals of the Department of Libraries is to build quality collections (books, videos, journals, etc.) on each campus to meet the curricular needs of the college. Active faculty involvement in the material selection process is essential in developing collections that are relevant and focused on individual instructional needs. All faculty are encouraged to meet with the appropriate librarian on their campus (see list below) to discuss what library materials are necessary to support their classroom activities.
- Suggest specific titles for purchase
- Suggest broad (or specific) subject areas for material acquisition
- Suggest specific types of materials for purchase (books, videos, etc.)
Please don't hesitate to stop by and visit with your suggestions:
Class Assignments Requiring Library Resources
Do you have an assignment that will require your students to use library resources? By leaving a copy of your assignment and/or syllabus with a librarian, we will be able to:
- Better assist your students in using the appropriate databases and print sources needed to complete assignments.
- Check our collections to make sure we have the print materials and electronic resources available to help your students with their coursework.
- Ask instructors for any clarification regarding assignments to ensure we are assisting the students in completing assignments correctly.
- Show instructors any resources available pertaining to their subject area, and can assist in developing assignments using these resources, if necessary.
Please feel free to contact the librarians at your campus to drop off assignments/syllabi. Librarians are located at the reference desk in the computer lab at each campus. Their names and contact information are available on the CSN Library Web Page under Library Department Faculty.
Faculty Research - Using Library Databases from Home
If your internet connection at home is provided by CSN (a PPP account), then you automatically have access to library resources from off-campus. However, If your home internet access is provided by a commercial service (Las Vegas Cable Modem, ViaWest, Etc.), you will need to obtain a special user name and password before using CSN library resources. To obtain the current user name and password, faculty may call any CSN library reference desk (Cheyenne - ext. 4419, Henderson - ext. 3039, West Charleston - ext. 5729) or contact the Library by sending email to: library@csn.edu.
Interlibrary Loan (Requesting Material Not Owned by CSN Libraries)
Items not owned by CSN libraries may be requested from other libraries around the world through a service called Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Faculty may wish to look at the CSN Interlibrary Loan Policy if they have never used this service before. Books or periodical articles may be requested as long as complete bibliographic information (author, title, etc.) is available. Faculty may request materials via ILL in two ways:
- "Interlibrary Loan Request Forms" are available at the circulation counter at each campus library. Fill out one form for each item requested, and leave them with the library circulation staff at your convenience.
- Faculty may also submit ILL requests online via WEBPAC (the online catalog). On the WEBPAC (online catalog) welcome screen choose "Request a Document Delivery Item" and complete the information requested on each subsequent screen. Remember, faculty must have a valid CSN library card to use this service.
