CSN Facts In Brief

Operation:

Founded in 1971, the College of Southern Nevada is a state-supported institution of higher learning offering two-year degrees, certificates and workforce training. CSN is comprised of three main campuses and more than 20 academic and learning centers spread throughout four counties, in a 42,000-square-mile area the size of Virginia. CSN is the largest college within the Nevada System of Higher Education and America’s fourth largest single college, multi-campus community college.

Enrollment:

In fall 2007, CSN enrolled 38,990 students, unduplicated headcount and had 19,713.4 full-time equivalent students, a 7.6 percent increase over Fall 2006.

Certificates and Degrees:

CSN offers more than 3,000 courses each semester, with more than 130 fields of study from which to choose. In addition to a bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene, there are more than 200 degree and certificate options.

Cost to Students for the 2007-08 Year:

• Resident Tuition: $54.75 per credit. Other fees may apply.
• Upper Division (300-400 level courses): $85.75 per credit. Other fees may apply.
• Nonresident Fee: $60.25 per credit nonresident fee in addition to tuition and technology fee, assessed on all nonresident students registering for six credits; $2,692.50 per semester nonresident fee in addition to tuition and technology fee, assessed on all nonresident students enrolled in seven or more credits.

Fall 2007 Student Profile:

• 9,572 students take online courses
• 44.8 percent of students (unduplicated headcount) are Caucasian/ 20.8 percent of students Hispanic/ 10.8 percent Asian and 10.1 percent African American
• 92 percent of students are residents of Nevada
• 74.1 percent of the student body, or 28,880 students, attend part-time and 25.9 percent, or 10,110 students attend full time
• CSN had 705 foreign students enrolled in Fall 2007 from more than 60 countries

Athletics:

The College is a member of the Scenic West Athletic Conference and a Division I member of the National Junior College Athletic Association. CSN also boasts the National Junior College 2003 World Series Champion men’s baseball team.

• 514 full-time faculty
• 254 faculty hold master’s degrees
• 164 faculty hold terminal degrees
• 844 part-time faculty

Economic Impact:

• CSN contributes $63,740,000 annually to the regional economy directly and indirectly through its faculty and staff (minus any money withdrawn from the economy in support of the college).
• CSN students from outside the region contribute $13,309,000 annually to the regional economy.
• Graduates and former students’ contribution to the regional economy: $1,561,423,000.
• The colleges’ total contribution to the regional economy: $1,638,473,000, or 2 percent of the $80 billion regional income.
