New Communication Courses for Fall 2009
The Department of Communication will be offering three new Communication courses in Fall 2009. Please read the course descriptions and objectives below. We hope that you will look forward to enrolling in one of these great new courses.
COM 101G Oral Communication -- Honors
Course Description
An honors level study of theory and pratcie in spoken communication, including prepared and extemporaneous speaking experience. Honors emphasizes a greater body of research and focuses on a required theme. Courses with a "G" suffizes are designated honors level courses and can be used to fulfill equivalent general education requirements.
Course Objectives
1. Students will understand that communication is dynamic.
2. Students will demonstrate knowledge of basic concepts and differences between informative, persuasive and entertainment speeches.
3. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of delivery (i.e. impromptu, extemporaneous, manuscript, and memorized).
4. Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze and evaluate speeches.
5. Students will understand the use of visual aids in the speech making process.
6. Students will demonstrate basic skills of argumentation.
7. Students will demonstrate the ability to be able to adapt to various audiences.
8. Students will demonstrate the ability to research and outline a speech.
9. Students will understand the relationship and ethical responsibilities of speaker to audience.
10. Students will develop a body of primary research organized around a globally relevant theme.
11. Students will demonstrate the ability to apply diverse viewpoints in relation to the selected theme.
COM 115 Applied Communication
Course Description
Emphasis placed on improving oral and written communication skills in the workplace, including organizational networks, interviewing, presentations, listening and groups. Culture and personality are analyzed.
Course Objectives
1. Students will recognize and appreciate the centrality of communication behavior in their professional lives.
2. Students will recognize formal and informal communication networks.
3. Students will learn to be an effective interviewer and a well-prepared interviewee.
4. Students will enlarge their communicative competence and confidence as a result of preparation.
5. Students will be able to differentiate between verbal and nonverbal symbols.
6. Students will become more effective listeners.
7. Students will develop conflict management skills.
8. Students will develop critical thinking, reasoning, organization, and research skills.
9. Students will identigy and understand differences in individual and organizational cultures.
10. Students will effectively communicate and function in a group setting.
COM 299 Special Topics in Communication
Course Description
This new course allows the Department of Communication to offer a course that can encompass a unique aspect of our discipline. This course will be used to teach communication topics that are not covered, or minimally covered, in other COM courses.
Course Objectives
1. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of themes, theories, and topics of interest in the field of Communication.
2. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding and application of written, oral, and visual communication.
3. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding and ability to use related technology required in the field of Communication.
4. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between diversity and communication and how diversity relates to different theories and topics of interest in the field of Communication.
5. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding and application of themes, theories, and topics of interest of communication as an art.
