LAS VEGAS, Oct. 7, 2009 — The Ornamental Horticulture Program at the College of Southern Nevada will offer a new certificate program in the 2010 spring semester. The program is designed for pesticide handlers, golf course maintenance personnel, parks and recreation staff, landscape maintenance workers, tree care providers and commercial pesticide applicators.
Four new short courses have been created that can be completed in 16 weeks. The certificate will be awarded to students who complete the series with a score of 80 percent or higher in each section.
“This series of classes can be used to fulfill the continuing education requirements for persons holding a commercial applicators license issued by the state of Nevada. The classes will prepare a person to take the Restricted Use Certified Applicator exam,” said Richard Reitz, director of the Ornamental Horticulture Program. “In addition, completers will also receive a Pesticide Handler Card, indicating that they have received the training required by the Worker Protection Standards legislation.”
Upon completion of the program students will be able to:
· Comply with federal and state regulations for storing, handling, mixing and applying pesticides
· Read and interpret pesticide labels and related documents
· Mix and apply pesticides with minimal risk to individuals and the environment
· Calibrate pesticide application equipment
· Calculate amounts of pesticide required to treat a site at a desired rate
Class space is limited. Students that are interested are encouraged to register early. Early registration for returning students begins November 12. Regular registration begins November 19. Students, who intend to enroll in all four classes, need to register in person. For more information, contact www.csn.edu.
