LAS VEGAS, Oct. 12, 2009 — The College of Southern Nevada is proud to announce the Latin Chamber of Commerce awarded CSN President Dr. Michael D. Richards the Friend of the Chamber award for his service to the Latino community on Saturday, October 10.

“This is a wonderful tribute to the college and all of our efforts to create a community at our college,” Richards said. “Being a friend of the Latin Chamber of Commerce is very important as it is in harmony with many of the goals of our institution.”

The Latin Chamber of Commerce recognized Dr. Richards and presented him with this award during its annual awards gala at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel & Casino in the Champagne Ballroom. The criteria for the award calls for the selection of an individual whose actions have contributed to the development of the Latin Chamber’s work.

“Dr. Richards’ support and friendship since the beginning of his presidency have helped our scholarship, youth and our upcoming adult programs, which will enhance the educational and job attainment in our Hispanic community and at large,” said Otto Mérida, President & CEO of the Latin Chamber of Commerce, Nevada.

Richards was selected as President of CSN in 2008 by the Nevada System of Higher Education’s Board of Regents. The college is the largest and most ethnically diverse higher education institution in the state, with approximately 22 percent of its student body of Latino origin.

Educated in Utah and Colorado, Dr. Richards holds a Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University of Denver (1979). As President of the College, Dr. Richards is responsible for 2,200 employees, approximately 43,000 students and a budget of more than $130 million.
