CSN's Department of Communication offers internships for college credit in the various fields of communication and journalism. Internships give communication and journalism majors the chance to gain valuable real-world experience before completing their degree.
Basic Internship Information
Check on the links to the left to see what internship connections we have. If we do not have an internship listed that you are interested in, then it is up to you to find an internship.
The COM 196 Internship class is offered during the fall and spring semesters only. If you wish to intern over the summer, you will need to contact the internship coordinator.
The COM 196 Internship Class
Students will need to complete 150 hours of internship work by the end of the semester. This is approximately 9 - 10 hours per week over 16 weeks.
Students receive a letter grade for the COM 196 Internship course. You will be required to complete various assignments besides working at your internship to earn your grade for this course. All coursework is completed online.
COM 196 Registration Guidelines
You should begin to arrange for your internship at least 6 to 8 weeks before you register for classes. Most businesses with internship openings will require a current resume and cover letter. If you need help with your resume and cover letter, please see the internship coordinator.
Once you receive permission to intern from the company you wish to intern for, you should make an appointment to meet with the internship coordinator.
During your meeting with the internship coordinator, you will receive a letter to give to your place of internship. This letter will let your place of internship know that you are receiving college credit for your internship as well as give other important contact information. You will also receive a "Prerequisite Waiver" form. This form will allow you to register for the COM 196 Internship course. Visit CSN Student Services at any of CSN's 3 main campuses with your form to enroll in the COM 196 Internship class.
