Coyotes avoid sweep with lopsided win over Geckos

Yavapai RoughridersThe woes continued in the first of two games on Saturday for the College of Southern Nevada baseball team.

The 16th-ranked Coyotes gave up seven runs in the seventh inning to Yavapai College (Ariz.) and couldn’t recover, falling 8-1 to the 18th-ranked Roughriders before bouncing back with an 11-3 victory over GateWay Community College (Ariz.) to close out play in the 3rd annual Coyote Border Battle at Morse Stadium.

In the first game, Yavapai (4-0) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a routine fly ball that was lost in the sun by left fielder Marvin Campbell.  CSN (1-3) answered back in the fifth on a two-out RBI single up the middle by Scott Dysinger, scoring Robbie Garvey to tie the game.

Campbell went 2-for-4 to lead the Coyotes.  Reliever Trevor Clausen (0-1) suffered the loss.

GateWay GeckosIn the second game, the Geckos (1-3) scored three runs in the third for the early lead, but it was all Coyotes from there on.

CSN scored four runs in the bottom half of the third with the help of five walks issued by GateWay starter Will Phillips (0-1).  The Coyotes added four more runs in the fifth and three more in the eighth to end the game on the tournament’s 8-run mercy rule after seven innings.

Campbell and Justin Mishalow each went 1-for-2 with two RBIs apiece for CSN, while Ryan Thomas was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

CSN travels to Chipola College (Fla.) next weekend to compete in the Rahal-Miller JUCO National Classic.  There, they will take on No. 2 Chipola, No. 3 Walters State Community College (Tenn.), No. 5 San Jacinto College-North (Tex.) and St. Petersburg College (Fla.).
