Walters State SenatorsMARIANNA, Fla. – Despite a slow 1-4 start, College of Southern Nevada coach Tim Chambers still has faith that his ball club will be very good coming down the stretch later in the year.

His Coyotes certainly proved his belief on Saturday, as CSN pounded Walters State Community College (Tenn.) 15-9 at Marianna High School in the Rahal-Miller JUCO National Classic.

Following the game, the 16th-ranked Coyotes headed back to Chipola College (Fla.) to take on the host Indians, where they came up just short of another shocker in a 3-2 loss.

In the first game, right-hander Gabe Weidenaar (1-0) took over for starter Chase Bradford in the third inning, throwing 4 2/3 innings to finish off the Senators (3-4). Weidenaar struck out 10 batters during that stretch and walked none while allowing three runs on six hits.

CSN (2-5) scored four runs in the second to take a 4-2 lead, but gave them all back to Walters State in the third. The Senators added two more in the fifth on a two-run homer to take an 8-4 advantage, but the comfortable lead was short-lived. CSN pushed three more runs across in the bottom of the fifth to come within one before unleashing for an eight-run sixth inning.

The big inning started with Scott Dysinger slapping a single through the left side to score Robbie Garvey from third on a suicide squeeze to tie the game at 8. Then, with the bases loaded, Daniel Higa gave the Coyotes the lead for good on a bases-clearing double to the left center gap to make it 11-8.

Dysinger was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs. Trevor Kirk was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs, while Matt Jaimes was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs for CSN.

Chipola IndiansIn the nightcap, Jaimes was 2-for-3 with a solo home run to left in the fifth, but it wasn't enough to lift the Coyotes.

Right-hander Kenny McDowall tossed 4 1/3 innings of one-hit relief for CSN, fanning three batters and walking none. He came out of the game in the sixth with a blister on his finger, and will be fine.

Chipola (5-2) threatened to get some insurance in the bottom of the sixth, but a laser of a throw by left fielder Josh Demello gunned down Indians catcher Dustin Spruill at the plate for the third out.

CSN gets another shot at a Top 5 team tomorrow morning, as they take on No. 5 San Jacinto College-North (Tex.) at 8 a.m. PST. This will be the first time the Coyotes face the Gators since the 2003 national championship game, which CSN won, 4-1. CSN is 2-0 all-time against San Jac.

The game will be broadcasted live on Network1Sports.com.
