Marvin CampbellAfter being on a four-game winning streak, College of Southern Nevada first baseman Marvin Campbell was reeling with the rest of his teammates after losing their first three games of the 8th annual Coyote Slugout at Morse Stadium on Friday and Saturday.

In order to stop the bleeding, he took matters into his own hands, going 2-for-5 while setting two new school records in the process as he led 16th-ranked CSN to a wild 16-13 victory over Cypress College (Calif.) on Sunday.

Campbell broke the school record for most RBIs in a single game (8), and he also became the first Coyote to ever hit two grand slam home runs in a single game.

"Coach challenged me this week to be more selective, and by doing so, I found myself in better counts to hit in," Campbell said.  "When I got my pitch, I didn't miss."

Both teams scored a run apiece in the second inning off of each other's errors, then the Chargers took a 3-1 lead in the third on an RBI double and fielder's choice.  The Coyotes answered back with a 7-spot in the bottom half of third, where Campbell's first grand salami gave CSN a 6-3 lead before adding two more runs.

Cypress (9-5) put together a four-run rally in the fifth to get within one before the Coyotes (8-8) plated two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth on a two-run single down the left field line by Joe Glavin to take a 10-7 lead.

Things didn't look so good for CSN in the eighth.  The bullpen collapsed and surrendered six runs to the Chargers to give them a stunning 13-10 lead, but the Coyotes weren't quite finished.  In the bottom of the eighth, CSN loaded up the bases for Campbell, who made school history with one swing of the bat and gave his team the lead for good.  Jordan Keegan added a two-run double to right center for good measure, giving the Coyotes the cushion they needed to hold off Cypress.

Kenny McDowall (2-1) picked up the win in relief, throwing 1 2/3 innings of one-hit baseball with a pair of strikeouts.  Glavin, Scott Dysinger, Trevor Kirk and Danny Higa each had two hits apiece for the Coyotes.

Parker Berberet went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs to lead Cypress.

Campbell – who already led the team in RBIs going into last weekend – vaulted his way to 19 RBIs on the young season, which puts him well on-pace for breaking the single-season record of 75 set by John Dibetta in 2000 and again in 2001.
