The College of Southern Nevada baseball team missed an opportunity to give coach Tim Chambers a milestone victory last week against College of Eastern Utah when they dropped the final game of that series, 6-5.
But when it came to this weekend, the Coyotes didn't miss a beat. Chasen Shreve (6-0) tossed a three-hit shutout in Friday's opener, striking out six and walking two to lead CSN past Salt Lake Community College 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. That win gave Chambers his 400th career win at CSN in just the Coyotes' 10th season.
Solid pitching all weekend long lifted the Coyotes to a four-game sweep of the Bruins. The Coyotes won Friday's nightcap, 2-0, before sweeping Saturday's games, 8-6 and 2-1.
CSN (24-12, 16-4 Scenic West Athletic Conference) scored two of Friday's three runs on sacrifice flies. An RBI double by Justin Mishalow scored the Coyotes' first of two runs in the second game.
In Saturday's first game, CSN scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back, building an 8-1 lead before emptying the bench. That is when Salt Lake (14-17, 8-12 SWAC) made things interesting, scoring twice in the sixth and adding three more runs in the seventh for the final margin.
Marvin Campbell went 2-for-2 with two RBIs to lead the way for CSN. Ryan Thomas was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Joe Robinson improved to 3-0 on the season with a complete-game victory in Saturday's nightcap. He allowed one run on two hits while walking three and striking out three.
CSN center fielder Robbie Garvey is also chasing history. He picked up five stolen bases against SLCC, lifting his season total to 32. The single-season school record for stolen bases is 37, set by Cameron Johnson in 2006.
With the series sweep, CSN has increased their winning streak against Salt Lake at Morse Stadium to 16 games – two of which are postseason wins and 10 of which are shutouts. The last time SLCC defeated CSN at Morse Stadium was on Feb. 24, 2006, in which the Bruins defeated the Coyotes 3-1 in the second game of a doubleheader.
Next up, the Coyotes travel to Twin Falls, Idaho, for a pair of doubleheaders against College of Southern Idaho at Skip Walker Field this Friday and Saturday. CSI is coming off a four-game sweep of their own against College of Eastern Utah in Price, Utah.
