College Level Examination Program (CLEP On-line )

What is The College Level Examination Program?

The CLEP enables nontraditional and traditional students to earn college credit by examination. Underlying the program are the beliefs that the future calls for more education for all citizens; that flexibility, innovation, and independent study are essential in education. What a person knows is more important than how he or she came to know it and that academic credit by examination is one key to a more flexible educational system.

Requirements differ from college to college, please check with the school where you are enrolled before taking any CLEP exams. You can choose from over 38 test titles in the areas of Composition and Literature, Foreign Languages, History and Social Science, Business, Science and Mathematics.

Is the CLEP test a timed test?

The CLEP test is a timed test. The number of questions and length of time varies depending upon the subject matter.

How much does it cost to take a CLEP?

The cost is $65.00 per test and a $30.00 non-refundable service fee per testing period. Unless it's a medical emergency, another $30.00 fee needs to be paid to reschedule the test. On July 1, 2008 the test fee will increase to $70.00  per test and a $30.00 non-refundable service fee per testing period.

How much does it cost for MILITARY personnel to take the CLEP?

Every college testing center has the ability to administer all 35 CLEP exams to eligible military personnel.  Military personnel who are eligible will have the fee of $65.00 waived. For information on who is eligible contact a testing center. Military are required to pay a proctor fee of $30.00 per test. This fee is non-refundable.

How often is the CLEP given?

The CLEP is administered on-line daily at 8:00AM, 11:00AM and 2:00PM. All test participants must register in advance.

What IDs are required when taking a CLEP exam?

Candidates must present TWO forms of ID when taking a CLEP exam. Candidates must present one photo bearing ID and one signature bearing ID. The following IDs are acceptable: current driver's license, passport or current student ID with a photo.

How many credits can I earn?

A cumulative total of 30 credits may be earned by taking CLEP tests. The number of credits a client can earn ranges form 3 to 12, when receiving a passing score. Each type of exam is awarded a specific number of credits. For additional information, come to the Testing Center for a CLEP packet and the pamphlet "What Your CLEP Score Means".

Dantes Subject Standardized Tests (DSSTs - On-line and Paper Versions)

What is the DSSTs?

The Dantes Subject Standardized Tests (DSSTs) is a nationally recognized testing program that gives you the opportunity to receive college credit for learning acquired outside the traditional college classroom. Thousands of individuals, particularly adults who are interested in boosting their careers, take the DSSTs annually and receive college credit. This exam speeds the educational process and provides the flexibility adults need, making earning a degree more feasible.

No perquisites are required to take the DSSTs; however, because requirements differ from college to college, please check with the school where you are enrolled before taking any DSSTs. Over 1,200 colleges and universities currently award credit for DSSTs, and the number is growing every day. You can choose from over 37 test titles in the areas of Social Science, Business, Mathematics, Applied Technology, Humanities, and Physical Science.

Is the DSSTs a timed test?

The DSSTs on-line tests are timed. The DSSTs paper version of the test is not timed test with the exception of the  public speaking exam(available in paper only).

How often is the DSSTs given?

The DSSTs is administered daily by appointment only. All test participants must register in advance. The on-line version is available on a first come first serve basis and may be taken on shorter notice than the paper version. Most exams are also available in the paper version, test booklets and Public Speaking Test tapes must be ordered individually for each test, allow approximately two to six weeks for arrival. The "public speaking exam" is NOT available on-line.

How much is the test fee?

The cost of the DSSTs on-line and paper versions are both $70.00 with a non-refundable proctor fee of $30.00. Each student must provide a pre-paid envelope when taking the paper version for mailing of the test booklet. For additional information, come to the Testing Center for a "DSSTs Candidate Information Bulletin" or download it via the web (See Sites Below). Unless it's a medical emergency, another $30.00 fee needs to be paid to reschedule the test.
