How much do the Placement Tests cost?

If you are taking the CSN placement exams to attend a course at ANOTHER COLLEGE OR HIGH SCHOOL there is a FEE. The same fee applies even if you are taking placement exams for another institution of the Nevada System of Higher Education such as UNLV, UNR, NV State College, NV State High School, WNCC, TMCC or Great Basin College. The FEE IS $40.00.
This package includes THREE placement exams – one Angel English Essay, one Accuplacer Math Placement and one Accuplacer Reading Placement.
The same fee applies whether a candidate takes one or all three of the exams.
The candidate MUST acquire the following information before completing the placement exams:
1. Does the recipient institution accept the placement exams given at CSN?
2. All exams results will ONLY be faxed to the recipient institution. No printouts will be issued to Non-CSN students.
a. The name of the contact at the recipient institution.
b. The land line of the recipient institution.
c. The fax number of the recipient.
d. All hand carried placement results will be considered invalid without a fax verification from a CSN Testing Center.
Who has to take the placement tests?
Computerized placement tests are required for all new students seeking a degree or transferring credits to another institution. Math and English placement tests are required, even if the student is NOT taking Math or English this semester.
Many courses require that the students have a firm foundation of the subject matter. Each subsequent course related to that specific area of study depends on prior knowledge. Students will have a better chance of success if they have the prerequisite knowledge.
Computerized placement tests will analyze the skills that the student possesses. Upon completion students will be placed into a course proper for the student's skill level.
What needs to be completed before taking the Placement Tests?
New CSN enrolling students MUST complete an admission form before testing and MAY attend an orientation in-person . Admission forms may be completed at home via the Internet (on-line) or in the lobby of the Student Affairs building at each of the major campuses (Charleston, Cheyenne, and Henderson). After completing the admission form and a optional orientation (RECOMMENDED), proceed to testing at a CSN Testing Center or Testing Site. Returning students may report directly to testing.
How often can I take the Placement Tests?
Accuplacer Math, Accuplacer Reading and English Placement Tests may be repeated every four months. Placement test scores are valid for TWO years. Students should review before the test date.

Ability to Benefit Test (ATB)
If time is critical, an alternate exam referred to as the Ability to Benefit (ATB - Accuplacer Test) MAY be taken to render the student eligible for financial aid.
Due to many changes - candidate Ability to Benefit eligibility will be determined on a case by case basis by Financial Aid. Passing Scores on the ATB does not infer eligibility to Financial Aid. Financial Aid will be determined by Matthew Sanchez, Director of Financial Aid (matt.sanchez@csn.edu).
The ATB is a Accuplacer comprehensive reading, sentence skills, and math (arithmetic) test. On average, the ATB is three to four hours in length. Please allow adequate time to complete testing.

ATB Re-Test Policy
Within any three-month period, ATB candidates are permitted an initial test and one retest. There must be a two week waiting period between the initial test and the retest. Students should be encouraged to use the two week waiting period for study and review of test content areas in which they did not obtain a passing score.
ACCUPLACER tests have high test-retest reliability coefficients, a measure of consistency of scores obtained by the same person when reexamined with the same test on different occasions. This means that if students retest without review and study, there is a high probability that their scores will not changes appreciably. A review of ACCUPLACER data shows that two weeks is the optimal waiting period since it allows students adequate time to locate study materials and sufficient time to review them thoroughly.
Candidates who do not pass the retest must wait three months from the date of the initial test.
Financial Aid - Some forms of college financial aid which pay for class tuition and/or books require that the student have a GED or high school diploma. For additional information on financial aid, visit your CSN Financial Aid Office or their web site at http://www.csn.edu/pages/611.asp. The Ability to Benefit test is not a replacement for a GED diploma.
