CSN Faculty Senate Manual


Section I - ELECTED OFFICERS

Chair Position Description

Election: The Chair-Elect automatically succeeds to the office of chair, in accordance with the Faculty Senate Bylaws.

Term: One year, commencing on June 1st.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties of the Chair shall include but not be limited to:

  1. Serve in accordance with the CSN Faculty Senate Bylaws.
  2. Supervise and ensure coordination of all activities of the CSN Faculty Senate.
  3. Promote communication throughout CSN Faculty Senate, all college faculty and the administration of CSN.
  4. Recommend appointment of standing committees of the CSN Faculty Senate.
  5. Recommend appointment of faculty representatives to UCSN Committees.
  6. Appoint Ad Hoc Committees.
  7. Recommend Faculty Senate Committee Chairs in accordance with the Bylaws.
  8. Ensure the proper functioning of Faculty Senate committees.
  9. Prepare agenda for Faculty Senate meetings; post agenda 72 hours before meeting date; send to all faculty at CSN.
  10. Preside at all Faculty Senate meetings and all general faculty meetings called by Senate.
  11. Conduct correspondence on behalf of the CSN Faculty Senate.
  12. Transmit to the CSN President in writing, Faculty Senate actions or recommendations requiring action or approval by the College President or the Board of Regents.
  13. Function as the official representative of the CSN Faculty Senate to the Board of Regents.
  14. Function as the official representative of the CSN Faculty Senate in all liaison activities within the institution, within the UCSN System, and throughout the community.
  15. Prepare Update to be distributed to all faculty as needed.
  16. Co-Chair College Coordinating Council, and distribute minutes.
  17. Co-Chair Princeton Group.
  18. Attend Board of Regents' meetings and Chancellor's Video Conferences with Council of Senate Chairs.
  19. Attend Faculty Senate Committee and Institutional Committee meetings as necessary.
  20. May delegate any of the above duties to the Chair-Elect, Faculty Senate Secretary or Senator, always retaining ultimate responsibility.

Chair-Elect Position Description

Election: The Chair-Elect is elected by the academic faculty in accordance with the Faculty Senate Bylaws.

Term: One year commencing June 1st.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Chair-elect shall include but not be limited to:

  1. Serve in accordance with the CSN Faculty Senate Bylaws.
  2. Perform duties and carry out responsibilities as delegated by the Chair.
  3. Prepare to assume the duties of Chair:
    1. Attend all Faculty Senate and general faculty meetings.
    2. Attend Faculty Senate Committee and Institutional Committee meetings if needed.
    3. Attend Board of Regents' meetings if possible.
    4. Assume duties of Chair in case of absence or incapacity of the Chair.
    5. Gain knowledge in the operation of the Faculty Senate.
    6. Attend as a member all CCC and Princeton Group meetings.
    7. Review Faculty Senate Manual with Chair, and keep Senate website current.

Immediate Past Chair Position Description

Term: One year commencing June 1st.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Past Chair shall include but not be limited to:

  1. Serve in accordance with the CSN Faculty Senate Bylaws.
  2. Perform duties and carry out responsibilities as delegated by the Chair.
  3. Assist Chair:
    1. Attend all Faculty Senate and general faculty meetings.
    2. Attend Faculty Senate Committee and Institutional Committee meetings if needed.
    3. Attend all CCC and Princeton Group meetings, as a member.

Secretary Position Description

Election: The Secretary shall be elected from among the Senators at the first meeting in the Faculty Senate after June 1 each year.

Term: One year at the pleasure of the Faculty Senate.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Secretary shall include but not be limited to:

  1. Maintain minutes of the activities of the Faculty Senate.
  2. Distribute minutes of the Faculty Senate meetings to the Senate membership, faculty, and other persons as designated by the Chair.
  3. Post copies of the minutes in designated places on each campus within seven days following the meeting.

Senator Position Description

Election: Senators are elected by the academic and administrative faculty in accordance with the Faculty Senate Bylaws.

Terms: Two years commencing last Senate meeting in May.
(Interim Senators fill the unexpired terms).

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Senators shall include but not be limited to:

  1. Regularly attend Senate meetings or arrange a proxy in accordance with the Faculty Senate Bylaws.
  2. Keep constituents informed of Senate proceedings.
  3. In conjunction with other Senators:
    1. Prepare a list of specified constituents and submit to the Chair prior to September 15 each year.
    2. Establish formal or informal means of polling constituents.
  4. In questions of voting, it is the responsibility of each Senator to act in the best interest of his/her constituents.
  5. Serve on one or more Faculty Senate committees, UCSN Committees, or Institutional Committees.
  6. Serve on the Faculty Senate Summer Executive Committee if required.
  7. Gain knowledge of the operation of Faculty Senate.
  8. Perform duties and carry out responsibilities as delegated by the Chair.
