TUTORIAL SERVICES
Tutorial Services has just been certified by The College Reading and Learning Association's (CRLA) Tutor Training Certification Program. CRLA certification is the highest national honor that college level tutoring programs can achieve. CRLA considers the CSN Tutor Training Program a "Comprehensive program dedicated to student success." * Note all tutors except ASL are included in the certification.
Note: Due to the ongoing budget constraints, we have a hiring freeze for new tutors. If you are interested in tutoring we will keep your contact information for one academic year.
What is Our Mission?
The mission of CSN’s Tutorial Services is to foster a positive and caring learning atmosphere that supports classroom instruction and overall student success.
What is Our Vision?
The vision of Tutorial Services is to increase success in the classrooms by helping students: 1) improve their academic motivation and performance; 2) enhance their self-esteem and confidence as independent learners; and 3) achieve their educational goals.
What are Our Objectives?
- Promoting independent learning
- Fostering confidence and self-esteem
- Working collaboratively with college faculty and staff to maximize opportunities for student success.
- Referring students to other retention services when staff deems it appropriate.
What can tutors help you with?
Tutors work with students to explain course content, answer questions, and review for exams. When combined with other support units within the Division of Student Affairs, such as Retention Services, taking students to tutoring becomes a powerful tool helping students learn difficult course material.
Who are our tutors?
All tutoring is provided by peer and professional tutors who have been selected for their academic abilities and motivation to help students. They receive training in best practices according to the College Reading and Language Association. We do not have tutors for all courses.
When can you start to get tutoring?
CSN Students may request tutoring (for credit seeking courses) at anytime throughout the semester, but seeking help early is the smart thing to do before it becomes too late and the damage becomes irreversible.
How do I sign up?
You must be a currently registered CSN student. You may receive tutoring for registered courses only. You must sign up in person.
What types of services do we have?
One on one tutoring (1 hour) is available in person through scheduled appointments, as well as drop in labs such as the Math and Science Resource Labs and the Communication Labs. Take advantage of both types of services. Online tutoring is available through Smarthinking, 24/7.
Interested in Writing Assistance? Help is available on all three campuses.
No Show Policy
If you sign up for one on one tutoring, there is a $9.00 no show fee for missed appointments. Appointments must be cancelled within 24 hours. Cancellations may be made in person, over the phone (leaving a message is ok) or by emailing any one of the campus' desks. All contact information is below. Students who do not pay their no show will have a hold placed on their account with admissions and records. If the event of an emergency students may fill out a form and return it in person. Waivers for no shows are considered on a case by case basis.
Do I have to attend class to recieve tutoring?
Please realize that tutoring is not a substitute for class attendance. You must attend class to benefit from tutoring! Students are expected to abide by the University and Community College System Student Code of Conduct.
Where is tutoring located?
All in person tutoring takes place on the College’s 3 main campuses and in some satellite locations. Tutoring occurs only in approved areas. Online scheduling is available for student convenience for in person tutoring.
Repeated Coursework Policy
Students are not eligible to receive free in person one-on-one tutoring services after the 3rd time of attempting to take a course for any combination of grade, audit, withdrawal or incomplete. In extreme cases of an immediate relative's death or of personal injury, an appeal with proper official documentation must be submitted to the Director of Tutorial Services.
