What is CTE?

CTE stands for Career and Technical Education. CTE programs are generally a three-year sequence of high school elective classes that provide students with the academic and technical skills, knowledge and training necessary to succeed in 21st-century careers. CTE prepares students to be college and career ready.

What is the CTE College Credit Program?

The CTE College Credit Program awards free college classes for approved high school CTE programs. Eligible high school classes are a part of a CTE high school program which is generally three years of high school classes (Level 1-3).

Our goal is to increase academic opportunities for high school students to obtain college credits in strategic pathways that lead toward meaningful CSN degrees/certificates or transfer education.

Which CTE programs qualify for college credit?

There are over 45 CTE programs offered in high schools throughout Nevada, which have been approved for college classes at CSN.

How do I know which CTE programs are offered at my school?

To find out what CTE programs at your high school qualify for college classes from CTE College Credit at CSN see Eligible CTE Programs by High School.

What are the program eligibility requirements?

High school students who receive the Nevada Department of Education Certificate of Skill Attainment may qualify for free college classes.

To be eligible you must:

  1. Complete an approved CTE high school program sequence with a minimum of 3.0/B grade point average or higher;
  2. Pass the state End-of-Program Assessment*; and
  3. Pass the state Workplace Readiness Skills Assessment*.

*State assessments are not administered by CSN.

Can I get college credit if I complete one of the CTE program high school classes?

No. To qualify for CTE College Credit you must:

  1. Complete the entire CTE Program course sequence with a “B” average or higher
  2. Pass both of the state CTE skills assessments
    1. End-of-Program Technical Skills assessment
    2. Workplace Readiness skills assessment
Is there a fee for the CSN CTE College Credit Program?

There is no cost to the student for the college classes earned through the program.

High school students are taking high school elective classes within CTE programs which may be eligible for college classes.

CTE College credit gives Nevada students a potential cost saving of approximately $500 per college class (class registration fees & books).

How will CTE College Credit benefit a student?

CTE College Credit is designed to give high school students a head start on their college pathway and save them money!

  • The college classes earned may be used towards completing program requirements within a CSN certificate, associate degree, or may be used as elective or transfer education.
  • The college classes earned are free.

High school students can apply as early as their junior year if they are in the third level class (e.g. Culinary Arts III). Students do not need to wait for the assessment results to apply. All students have up to three (3) years from their high school graduation to apply.

What should I do with my confirmation email?

Save the confirmation email you receive after completing the CTE College Credit application. It details the information you provided to us and includes the college classes you may be eligible to receive, how to request CSN transcripts, and how to get started at CSN.

This email is a useful tool when meeting with a college academic advisor or recruiter. You will be able to share with them the exact CSN classes you may be earning so that you don’t sign up for the same class.

Can I use the CSN classes earned through CTE College Credit towards any degree?

The college class(es) apply to specific certificates and degrees. The direct CSN pathways are listed on our home page in the section of high school programs that qualify for free college credit at CSN.

The classes may be utilized in other ways, students will need to speak with their CSN Academic Advisor to discuss their specific academic plans.

When will the college classes be recorded on my CSN record?

A student who has met the CTE College Credit eligibility requirements will have the corresponding CSN college class posted to their permanent CSN record, based on the date they applied. Students who apply by the spring deadline will have their college class posted by the end of August and students who apply by the fall deadline will have their college class posted by the end of December.

I plan to attend CSN. How do I enroll?

Congratulations on your choice to become a future CSN COYOTE! You will be able to skip the CSN Admissions Application because you have already been admitted to CSN when you completed it as part of the CTE College Credit application process. To connect with your CSN Recruiter assigned to your high school and get assistance with enrollment, contact the Department of Recruitment & College Success Office at studentrecruitment@csn.edu.

How can I obtain a CSN Transcript?

Current students may view and print out unofficial transcripts using MyCSN (log in to your Student Center). For assistance or questions visit the MyCSN Help page.

Students should wait until the CTE College Credit college classes have been recorded to their CSN records before requesting a copy of their official transcripts.

What is a point award? How do I use the point award towards a limited entry program at CSN?

Many CSN Health Science programs are competitive and have requirements that must be met before a student can apply for admission. These are Limited Entry programs and their admission process is points-based.

There are CTE programs that instead of college classes, are awarded point(s) towards a specific Limited Entry CSN degree or certificate program. To receive the point award, students must turn in the requested documentation in their Limited Entry Admissions Application.

Students do not need to complete the CTE College Credit application process if their CTE program solely awards a Point Award. Please visit Health Program Advising for more information.

I already graduated from high school. Can I still submit a CTE College Credit application?

You can apply for CTE College Credit within three years of graduating from high school.
