World Language courses offered at CSN will help you build a foundation in a chosen language and develop the confidence to communicate with proficient speakers in a proper manner. We offer a degree in World Language Associate of Arts with emphasis available in Spanish, French, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, Italian, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Latin, Filipino, Portugese, Armenian, and German.

FRENCH

French is the official language used in the France and many other countries. The benefits of learning French can gain you the opportunity to meet new friends, understand French culture and traditions, and explore France and other French speaking countries through its language. The French discipline offered at CSN helps students build a foundation of French language and to develop the confidence to communicate with French speakers in a proper manner.

JAPANESE

Our Japanese program offers students a solid foundation in spoken and written communication, which will help them develop confidence in using the language. Once students have learned basics, they can join the Japanese language club where they have plenty opportunities to meet both native and non-native Japanese speaking students to improve their communication skills and socialize through club activities held weekly. We participate in the Southern Nevada speech contests annually, and our students have done exceptionally well. We have numerous graduates successfully transferring to UNLV, UNR, and several other 4-year universities in the U.S. and in Japan to continue their Japanese language studies.

ARABIC

The Arab world comprises those countries in which Arabic is the primary language; this region covers a vast geographical area, from Morocco in the west to Iraq in the east, and has a population of more than 300 million in 22 countries.

In addition to speaking a dialect of Arabic, almost all Arabic students have studied Modern Standard of Arabic at schools. At CSN we teach students Modern Standard of Arabic which is a common language between Arab people. The Arabic program at CSN offers students to learn how to read, write, and communicate using basic conversations with Arab people. Students at CSN also learn about the culture and traditions of the Arab world.

RUSSIAN

Russia is the biggest country in the world, which spans 11 time zones, covers 1/8th of the world’s land surface and is twice the size of the US. Russian  is the most widely spoken language in Europe and there are about 270 million Russian speakers in the world. Russian is one of the official languages of United Nations, UNESCO, World Health Organization, International Atomic Energy Agency, Food and Agriculture Organization, International Criminal Court, World Bank and International Olympic Committee to name a few, and it is second most widely used language on the Internet. It is also one of the two official languages aboard the International Space Station and all foreign astronauts or even space tourists must speak Russian. It has been a language of critical national importance to the US government for decades, which has resulted in multiple government-sponsored scholarships and employment opportunities with the FBI, CIA, USDA, Department of Commerce, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Homeland Security, Department of Labor and so on. It is also the language in which numerous world-renowned literature masterpieces have been created. It is the language of Dostoevsky, Pushkin, Gogol, Turgenev, Lermontov, Bulgakov and so many others. At CSN we offer two years (four semesters) of Russian language classes, an Associate Degree in World Languages with the emphasis in Russian as well as the Russian Culture through Film course. Добро пожаловать!

ITALIAN

Italian is one of the most commonly studied languages in the world for a number of reasons. It boasts one of the top economies in the world, and is especially influential in fields such as fashion, design, music, art, film, engineering, medicine, mechanics, tourism, and culinary arts. It is the closest language to latin, which is the root of over half of the English language, so learning Italian can boost English vocabulary, as well as prove useful for fields of study like law, medicine, and science, which use latin terminology. Italian is also a Romance language, making it easier to learn for speakers of other Romance languages such as Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Italy contains more UNESCO World Heritage sites than any other country, is the birthplace of the Renaissance, and the most popular location for studying abroad (outside of English-speaking countries). The Italian program at CSN emphasizes language through culture, and students can expect to gain a deeper understanding of their own culture through language study. The program focuses communication and literacy development in speaking, listening, reading, and writing by exposing students to authentic contexts and interactions.

CHINESE

Standard Chinese, also known as Mandarin Chinese, is the official language used in China and one of the official languages in the United Nations, Taiwan and Singapore. They are around 16% of world population, about 1.2 billion people, speaking Chinese as their first language. Despite the growing economy in China, the benefits of learning Chinese language can gain the opportunity to meet new friends, understand Chinese culture and traditions to open up a diverse perspective, and explore China through its thousand-years language. The Chinese Program offered at CSN helps students to build up a foundation to learn the Chinese language, and develop the confidence to communicate with Chinese speakers in a proper manner.

KOREAN

안녕하세요? ( An nyeong ha se yo?) Hi, How are you?

The Korean Great King Sejong created Korean characters (Hangul) in 1443. The Hangul is phonetic alphabet consists of 10 vowels and 14 consonants and is very easy to learn. One of the reasons students are interested in learning Korean is because of the popularity of K-Pop. K-Pop entertainment culture such as music and drama are attracting over 35 million fans from around the world. The world appears smaller than ever and being acquainted with the Korean language and culture prepares you for exciting life opportunities and travel in a rapidly changing world.

The Korean language program at CSN is the only post-secondary program in the state offering a degree with Korean major. For the students ease of access, an online first year Korean course is offered.

THAI

Thai is the official language used in the Thailand. The benefits of learning Thai can gain you the opportunity to meet new friends, understand Thai culture and traditions, and explore Thailand through its language. The Thai discipline offered at CSN helps students build a foundation of Thai language and to develop the confidence to communicate with Thai speakers in a proper manner.

FILIPINO (TAGALOG)

Filipino, also known as Tagalog, is the official language used in the Philippines. The benefits of learning Filipino can gain you the opportunity to meet new friends, understand Filipino culture and traditions, and explore the Philippines through its language. The Filipino discipline offered at CSN helps students build a foundation of Filipino language and to develop the confidence to communicate with Filipino speakers in a proper manner.

PORTUGESE

Portuguese is the official language used in Portugal. The benefits of learning Portuguese can gain you the opportunity to meet new friends, understand Portuguese culture and traditions, and explore Portugal through its language. The Portuguese discipline offered at CSN helps students build a foundation of Portuguese language and to develop the confidence to communicate with Portuguese speakers in a proper manner.

ARMENIAN

The Armenian Language is the official language spoken in Armenia. Armenian Language dates back to 405 AD making it one of the oldest Indo European languages in the world.  Due to its turbulent history and the Armenian Genocide, Armenians are dispersed in Diaspora, hence creating the Eastern and Western Dialect of the Armenian language. The benefits of learning Armenian can gain you the opportunity to explore the history, Literature, culture, traditions, and religion of one of the oldest people who were the first to adopt Christianity. The Armenian  discipline offered at CSN helps students build a foundation of the Armenian language and to develop the confidence to communicate with native speakers in a proper manner.

GERMAN

German is the official language used in Germany. The benefits of learning German can gain you the opportunity to meet new friends, understand German culture and traditions, and explore Germany through its language.
