In this session, new and returning Jumpstart instructors will get a comprehensive look at administrative procedures and practice guidance to meet CSN and NACEP standards. The session will cover NACEP’s non-compliance policy, CSN semester timelines, new-hire process, access to student resources and a review of the instructor’s handbook.

Join the Centers for Academic Success team to discuss empowering learners through academic support. Our conversation will include the following topics: why academic support matters, types of academic support, challenges, best practices, and success stories. Learn about CAS programs, such as TutorChat, Supplemental Instruction, Math Peers, Strategies for Academic Success, Don't Cancel that Class, and unlimited drop-in academic support. Transparent Assignments that Remove Learning Barriers - Room H211 - Instructor Elsa Olson
Evidence has shown that using transparent assignments in introductory-level courses can remove barriers to student learning, especially among underserved student groups. By redesigning just a few assignments in your course, you could see a marked improvement in student work quality. In addition, transparent assignments reduce student uncertainty about assignments, student clarification questions, and even assignment grading time. In this workshop, you will learn how to redesign assignments using transparent assignment technique and practice redesigning an existing assignment.

Stand Out as Part-Time Faculty: Best Practices and Strategies - Room H116 - Instructor Taz Rosenthal
The workshop will explore ways to stand out, increase visibility, and contribute to CSN’s mission of student success. We will discuss both the benefits and challenges of teaching part-time at a diverse multi-campus school, in terms of student body, faculty expectations, and students’ expectations of faculty. In addition, the workshop will examine how each CSN’ campus is distinct, and how CSN’s mix of in-person, online, and hybrid classes is designed to promote student success through diverse learning and teaching experiences. Finally, the workshop will describe, based on my own experiences as part-time faculty in a variety of higher education settings, some best practices for self-care, wellness, and satisfaction as part-time faculty, including time management, creating a virtual office and/or sharing space, accessing CSN’s available professional and personal resources, and locating a faculty mentor or mentors.
Administrative Responsibilities in the Classroom: Impacts on Enrollment Management - Room S110 - Instructors Cathy Godfrey & Peter Hurley
The CSN Registrar and Director of Financial Aid will discuss the importance of the administrative responsibilities and expectations of faculty classroom management. We will discuss topics including: late registration, the Census Date, attendance, course participation, grade reporting, and Satisfactory Academic Progress. What happens in your classroom not only affects your students, but also has a direct impact on complex administrative functions like registration backpacking, permanent student records, FERPA compliance, financial aid eligibility, and scholarship qualifications. We will provide simple steps and helpful hints that will allow you to enhance the enrollment management process.
Increase Teaching and Learning Effectiveness Through Curriculum Mapping - Room C2631 - Instructor Shari Peterson
This workshop is designed to enhance your teaching practice by focusing on alignment of the teaching-learning-achievement process. Alignment of course content, learning activities, teaching strategies, and assessment measure choices with course student learning outcomes can improve student success and overall course effectiveness. This course encourages faculty discussion and self-reflection of teaching and assessment methodology. Attendees will be provided with various resources that can be easily implemented for the upcoming semester.

This session will introduce faculty to the concept of game-based (vs gamification) learning and demonstrate its potential for enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes in higher education. Understanding the Role of First Year Experience Courses in the Persistence and Retention of Latinx Students - Room H120 - Instructor Luis Ortega
A total of 18 Latinx students were interviewed for this single phenomenological case study and provided valuable information about their experiences while they were completing a First Year Experience Course (FYE). The overarching question was: How can FYEs or college seminars bridge the gap of retention, persistence, servingness, and completion for Latinx students in higher education? Four major themes were created from analyzing the data: 1) cognitive factors, 2) social factors, 3) Institutional Factors, and 4) FYE course content and lack of servingness. The findings also supported the challenges of Latinx students to fit in a college environment and comply with family expectations.
Working with American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters - Room H211 - Instructor Daniel Martin-Vasquez
This workshop will engage in conversations about best practices in working with ASL Interpreters in the post-secondary setting. The following items will be discussed:
A brief history of the profession of ASL Interpreters, Communication Styles and Types of Interpreters, Interpreter qualifications/certifications/ethics, Student’s process of getting ASL Interpreter services, the Interpreter’s role in the classroom, What instructors should know about working with ASL Interpreters at CSN, and a Q&A session.
There's an Emergency on Campus: What Do I Do? - Room H116 - Instructor Carey Sedlacek & Eva Berik
This session will provide information about reporting on-campus emergencies and incidents such as criminal activity, facility issues, student and employee injuries, and other safety concerns. CSN Environmental Health & Safety will walk attendees through the reporting process and follow-up actions for various types of urgent situations so that faculty and staff are prepared to act quickly and respond in the event of an emergency.
