The Daughters of Bilitis was one of the first known #lesbian organizations in the United States. Founded in 1955 in San Francisco, CA, the Daughters of Bilitis grew to establish chapters nationwide. Founders and early members were well known equality activists but struggled to align themselves with male-dominated gay rights groups such as long-time ally The Mattachine Society. The national organization was dissolved in the 1970s, but the group is credited with paving the way to female leadership in the modern #equality movement.
