This is an important message from Nancy E. Brune, executive director of the Guinn Center for Policy Priorities. She notes the importance of upcoming public forums for candidates running for Nevada's education boards. Greetings During the 2015 78th Legislative Session, Nevada’s political leaders passed legislation that invested over $400 million per year into Nevada’s education system. In order to ensure Nevada’s taxpayers would receive a positive return on investment from these reforms, the Legislature included stronger measures of accountability in many of the education bills. In addition, the quality of governance of our education boards can also impact the return on investment of these new programs and initiatives. Given the importance of the quality of governance of our education boards, it is critical that we increase awareness of the roles and responsibilities of these positions and the individuals seeking these positions. As such, the Kenny Guinn Center for Policy Priorities (“Guinn Center”), a bipartisan, state-wide research and policy analysis center that has conducted research on education issues, will be hosting a series of public forums for candidates seeking positions on our three education boards: school district (both Clark County and Washoe County), Nevada State Board of Education, and the Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education. This series of public forums will be held in different geographic regions in Clark County and Washoe County. Partnering with the Guinn Center to host these forums are the following: Nevada Succeeds, a state-wide, coalition of business leaders committed to improving the state’s education system; and H.O.P.E. (Honoring Our Public Education), a parent advocacy group created to unite parents and to inform our community about the unmet needs and funding disparities in our public education system. Our first series of candidate forums will be held as follows: (1) Tuesday, May 17: 6:00 to 7:30 pm, Henderson Convention Center, 200 S Water Street, Henderson, NV 89015. Moderated by Las Vegas Review-Journal Columnist and Political Commentator Steve Sebelius. (2) Wednesday, May 25, 2016: 6:00 to 7:30 pm, Centennial Hills Library, 6711 N. Buffalo Drive, Las Vegas, 89131. Moderated by Las Vegas Review-Journal Columnist and Political Commentator Steve Sebelius (3) Tuesday, May 31, West Las Vegas Library: 6:00 to 7:30 pm, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd, Las Vegas, 89106. Moderated by thinkLaw Creator and Owner Colin Seale. Food and refreshments will be served. -- Nancy E. Brune, Ph.D. Executive Director Kenny Guinn Center for Policy Priorities 6795 Edmond Street, Suite 300 Las Vegas, NV 89118 Phone: 702-522-2178 Email: nbrune@guinncenter.org website: www.guinncenter.org/ http://guinncenter.org/about-us/staff/
