R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) classes are intended to teach participants to take an active role in their own self-defense and psychological well-being, by helping women feel safer and better prepared on campus. The 12-hour course is broken into a 4-day training in which participants acquire self-defense education through realistic tactics and techniques. Classes are open to all female students, faculty, and staff. Register for the sessions taking place at UNLV on: Tuesday, May 21, Thursday, May 23, Tuesday, May 28, and Thursday, May 30 from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. This is a 4-day course. Attendees must attend all four sessions.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Kevin currently resides in Las Vegas. Congrats to the CSN ACF Knowledge Bowl team! The group won silver at the American Culinary Federation Western Regional convention in Coeur d’Alene Idaho last week! The competition is a Jeopardy style, double elimination quiz game. The team was coached by Chef Steve Soltz, CHE Chef/Professor and includes Melissa Fried, Amanda Walls, Gerald Cahoon, and Amber Cataloni. The competition includes sensory questions, hidden pictures, and of course challenging culinary, baking, nutrition, sanitation and math questions.

Congrats to Jason Isaacs and Edward Reyes, two CSN culinary students who won 1st place in the Las Vegas NEWH Battle of the Green Toque Mystery Basket Competition last week. The competition required the students to prepare two courses in 60 minutes utilizing sustainable ingredients revealed to them just minutes before starting to cook. Four teams representing the culinary programs of The Art Institute of Las Vegas, CSN, Le Cordon Bleu and UNLV faced off in this sustainable culinary extravaganza. Jason and Edward both received individual first place awards as well as a plaque to be displayed at CSN. Thank you to all who supported their efforts and thanks to Andrea Reyes for the photos!

For those of you with financial aid. The census will lock in at 11:59 p.m. tonight so all changes in courses made today either dropping or adding will count. Your financial aid for the semester will be based on your credit hours of enrollment on the census date. If you have already received a financial aid refund for the semester and your credit hours of enrollment change after the financial aid refund is sent out, you may owe money back to CSN after your financial aid eligibility is recalculated (if you dropped credits). If you have added courses, your financial aid package may be adjusted to reflect your increased credit hours of enrollment. You may gain additional financial aid eligibility depending upon the type of financial aid you are receiving.

Happy Fun Fact Vendredi de CSN: In June 2011, France banned the words "Facebook" and "Twitter" from radio and TV unless either company is the focus of a story. According to Entertainment Weekly (ew.com, 6/6/2011), the French government's broadcasting authority felt that broadcasters saying things like "Find us on Facebook" or "Follow us on Twitter" served as stealth promotion for the two social networking sites and this was unfair to all other social networking sites. From JOUR 101 Critical Analysis of the Mass Media and CSN Communication Professor Rick Marks. The course is offered onsite and online every semester. In addition, there is an 8-week section beginning in a few weeks that is online only. There will also be a 4-week online section this summer and several sections this fall.

CSN students - we want to make sure you know about a new course refund policy that takes effect this fall. CSN refund procedures for all students that withdraw from a 16-week class: 1) 100% if withdrawal is initiated prior to the end of the first week of instruction; and 2)50% if initiated prior to the end of the second week of instruction; 3) No refund shall be given after the start of the third week of instruction; and 4) No refund shall be given for the application or admission fee.
