The College of Southern Nevada is committed to the safety, health, and well-being of all members of the College community.

Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) supports a safe learning and working environment by providing a broad range of environmental compliance and occupational health and safety services that support the overall mission of CSN. These services are designed to protect personnel, the environment, and our facilities while promoting compliance with applicable laws, regulations, codes, and standards.

EH&S also provides incident management, hazardous materials and waste management, hazard evaluation and mitigation, information and training programs, and environmental health and safety consulting and inspection services. For more information, please visit one of the safety categories below.

If you have hazardous or regulated waste that needs to be collected for proper disposal, please complete the form below. Hazardous Waste includes: Biohazardous/ Medical Waste, Hazardous Waste (ignitable, reactive, toxic, corrosive), Regulated Non-Hazardous Waste, Universal Waste (batteries, pesticides, mercury containing devices, lamps).

Obtain EHS Restricted Commodity Approval prior to purchasing:

  • Chemicals (including commercially available household products)
  • Compressed Gases
  • Hazardous Materials

Chemicals that are being ordered for the “first time” by a department require New Chemical approval from the EHS Department. This is to ensure that Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available and that all safety and regulatory requirements are in place prior to the chemical arriving on campus. This New Chemical approval is required regardless of purchase method (i.e., P-Card, requisition, free vendor samples, etc.).

Once approval is obtained, the purchaser may use the approval for subsequent purchases of the same chemical or hazardous product.

New chemicals and restricted commodities are not to be purchased/used until Approval is obtained by EHS.

Publicly Accessible Life Safety Equipment

We are committed to creating a safer campus by providing visible, accessible, and easy-to-use safety and emergency equipment. Strategically placed throughout our campuses, these public-access stations empower our community to respond immediately and effectively during critical situations.

While training is preferred for anyone using emergency equipment, AEDs and Stop the Bleed kits are specifically designed for immediate public use by untrained bystanders during the critical first minutes, when professional medical help may not yet be on site. Certification is not required to take action and help save a life.

In an Emergency On-Campus:

  • Call University Police Department (UPD) immediately
    • 702-895-3669 (from cell phone)
    • 7-911 (from campus phone)
    • CSN Mobile Safety App
    • Emergency Red Phones (classrooms)
    • Emergency Call Boxes (outdoors)
  • Give your location first (campus, building, floor, room number, or visual landmark).
  • Briefly explain the emergency (what happened, who is affected, and any immediate hazards).
  • Follow the dispatcher’s instructions and remain on the line until told to disconnect.
  • Retrieve the emergency equipment and follow instructions provided with the unit until emergency personnel take over.
  • What they are: Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are portable medical devices designed to treat sudden cardiac arrest. Anyone, including untrained bystanders, can use an AED to provide immediate treatment before emergency responders arrive.
  • When to use: Use the AED when a suspected cardiac arrest victim has an apparent LACK OF CIRCULATION indicated by:
    • Unconsciousness
    • Absence of normal breathing
    • Absence of a pulse or signs of circulation
  • How to use: Open the case and turn on the AED. Follow the audio and visual prompts through every step of the process. The AED will analyze the victim’s heart rhythm and will not deliver a shock unless it is medically necessary, making it nearly impossible to accidentally harm someone.
  • Location: Housed in clearly marked, accessible wall-mounted cabinets located in high-traffic areas, such as main reception areas or lobbies, near elevators, and along main corridors.

  • What they are: Emergency kits containing specialized trauma and medical supplies, such as tourniquets, pressure dressings, and gauze, designed to help control severe, life-threatening bleeding until professional first responders arrive. They are meant for use in emergency situations and are not intended to be a substitute for traditional first aid kits.
  • How to use: Designed for bystanders with little to no medical training. Clear, visual instruction cards are included inside every kit.
  • Location: Stop the Bleed kits are co-located inside our campus AED cabinets for centralized emergency access. AEDs are housed in clearly marked, accessible wall-mounted cabinets located in high-traffic areas, such as main reception areas or lobbies, near elevators, and along main corridors.
    • Supplemental bleeding-control supplies are available in First Aid cabinets.

  • What they are: Secure, puncture-resistant biohazard containers designated for the safe disposal of medical sharp items like needles, syringes, and lancets. Proper disposal of sharps is essential to prevent injuries and ensure compliance with campus and regulatory safety standards. Sharps should never be placed in regular trash, recycling bin, or flushed down the toilet.
  • How to use: Drop used sharps directly into the one-way deposit slot. Only sharps should go into designated sharps containers. Do not dispose of other non-sharp waste into these containers. Never reach into a sharps container. Do not force items in. Do not overfill the container, stop using it when it is about three-quarters (3/4) full and request a replacement.
  • Request sharps container replacement:
  • Location: Publicly available sharps disposal containers are wall-mounted next to or inside campus restrooms.
    • We are in process of transitioning to making sharps disposal accessible next to or inside the restrooms. During the transition period sharps containers can be found at their former location adjacent to AED cabinets or next to 1st floor restrooms.
    • Currently, publicly accessible sharps disposal containers are available ONLY at the main campus locations.

  • What they are: First aid kits provide basic supplies for treating minor injuries, such as cuts and minor burns.
  • How to use: Use first aid kit supplies to provide basic care for minor injuries, following the instructions provided in the First Aid Guide included in each kit.
    • If an injury cannot be addressed using a first aid kit, call University Police Department (702-895-3669) for medical assistance.
    • After the immediate situation has been addressed, report all student, faculty, and staff injuries to the Environmental Health and Safety Department, regardless of severity, by following the instructions provided on the CSN Incident Reporting webpage.
  • Request First Aid Kit Supplies Refill:
  • Location: Centralized first aid stations are co-located alongside our campus AED cabinets in high-traffic areas, such as main reception areas or lobbies, near elevators, and along main corridors.

Restricted-access first aid kits located in labs, shops, and offices are intended for use only by occupants of those areas.

Emergency equipment is most effective when our community feels confident using it. Training is highly recommended because it builds confidence, reduces panic, and minimizes the risk of improper use. The Environmental Health and Safety Department offers hands-on training in AED use, Stop the Bleed, and fire extinguisher operation during scheduled training events or upon request. College personnel interested in training should contact the EHS Department to make arrangements.
