College of Southern Nevada’s biology, chemistry, engineering, and earth science laboratories give students access to the same equipment and resources found in leading industry and research facilities. This valuable, hands-on experience using advanced technology, combined with personal attention from faculty, prepares our students for employment in a variety of laboratory positions. Below is some of the major instrumentation housed at the College of Southern Nevada, West Charleston Campus:
THERMO IC1100 system
This ion chromatograph is a liquid chromatography instrument used to separate and quantify anions and cations (positively and negatively charged ions). We use it especially for analysis of natural waters and municipal waters for ions like fluoride, chloride, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and bromide.
PE QSight Triple Quad 400 LC MS/MS
This Perkin Elmer LCMS system is ideal for analyzing food, cannabis, and environmental samples. The QSight triple quad systems consistently deliver the throughput and productivity you need in your analytical testing lab. This is the premier model in the QSight family.
SHIMADZU GCMS-QP2010 SE
An advanced standard gas chromatograph (GC) coupled with a mass spectrometer (MS). Temperature differences are used to separate mixtures of chemical compounds in a column. The column is plumbed to the mass spectrometer, which identifies compounds present at part-per-billion to part-per-million levels.
Thermo Scientific GC-MS w/Zero Headspace
CSN has a state-of-the-art Thermo Scientific GC-MS With zero headspace capability. This technology allows the researcher to evaluate food, environmental, or forensic toxicology testing.
Agilent 7850 ICP MS system
The 7850 automatically addresses matrix effects and solves polyatomic and doubly-charged ion interference problems to simplify analyses, with each sample needing to be measured only once. The 7850 can measure high matrix samples without needing matrix matched calibration standards or custom dilutions.
Perkin Elmer PE 3300 DV ICP-OES
The spectrometer is a polychromator with more than one emission wavelength in a parallel fashion. This system can analyze more than six thousand emission wavelength lines for 72 of the 110 elements simultaneously.
Fisher Scientific Trace 1300 GC with a FID
Its simplified user interface requires few keystrokes to accomplish tasks, yet maintains full programmability.

The Thermo Scientific™ picoSpin™ 80 Series II NMR Spectrometer is a compact instrument that offers a hands-on tool for chemical identity—enhancing student learning with an easy-to-operate, cryogen-free instrument.
MIDI-VAP 4000 system
MIDI-VAP 4000 is a system devoted to rapid and repeatable isolation by the distillation of ammonia, phenols, and cyanide from water, soil, and solid matrix samples.
JEOL JSM IT200 SEM with EDS
The ability to directly view the morphology of materials on scales in the um to nm range is critical to materials science and solid state chemistry. The JEOL JSM-IT200 is a scanning electron microscope capable of <10 nm resolution. Some other useful features are as follows:
- High vac and low vac operation, up to ~120 Pa.
- Secondary Electron and Backscattered Electron detectors for complementary morphology and compositional information
- X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) for elemental analysis with point ID, area scans, line scans, and mapping.
- XY motorized stage with manual rotation and tilt.
As a rule, samples must be moderately conductive to produce good images and must be fixed to a substrate in order to prevent damage to the column/gun.

Beckman Coulter DU 530 UV/VIS Spectrometer
The Beckman DU 530 is a great research-grade instrument. It uses a Single Cell Module that supports a variety of optional cell holders including the 16mm test tube 1cm standard 5cm and 10cm rectangular turbidity and 50uL microcell.
Shimadzu HPLC System
This Shimadzu HPLC system includes SCL-10A, SIL-10AF, SPD-10A, CTO-10AC, FRC-10A, and is fully automated.
Dionex ASE 350
The Accelerated Solvent Extractor, ASE, can use multiple solvents to extract solid samples at elevated temperature and high pressure. This minimizes reflux times from hours to minutes.
Leica DM750P Polarizing Microscope
Microscope for earth science for education and research. Capable of analyzing rock thin sections and identifying minerals.
Bio-Rad CFX96 Touch Real-Time PCR
Used for amplifying DNA/RNA during the PCR, not at its end, as in conventional PCR. Real-time PCR can be used quantitatively and semi-quantitatively.
Bio-Rad xMark microplate spectrophotometer
The microplate is designed to measure absorbance in small volumes. It is typically used to determine the concentration of nucleic acids and proteins.
