AI Statement
At College of Southern Nevada, we recognize the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in education and are committed to both informing and guiding our community on its use. Our mission is to empower our students and communities to achieve, succeed, and prosper, and we believe that understanding and navigating AI responsibly is a key part of that mission. While we currently do not have specific policies regarding the use of AI tools in the classroom, we encourage thoughtful consideration and ethical use of these technologies.
Generative AI
Generative AI refers to technologies that can create content, such as text, images, or music, based on input data. These tools can produce creative works, answer questions, and even simulate conversations. While generative AI has the potential to enhance learning and support creative endeavors, it also raises concerns in education. The primary issues include the potential for misuse, such as generating content that could be passed off as original work, and the challenge of ensuring academic integrity. In keeping with our mission to foster achievement and success, we encourage responsible use of generative AI that supports educational growth.
Academic Integrity and AI
As AI tools become more prevalent, it's crucial for students and faculty to uphold the principles of academic honesty. We remind our community to refer to our Academic Integrity Policy to ensure that AI is used responsibly and does not compromise academic standards. Upholding integrity is central to our mission, and we expect all members of our community to use AI in ways that align with these values.
Current Usage and Guidelines
At this time, the use of AI in the classroom and other settings is at the discretion of individual instructors. To support (not circumvent) teaching and learning, we encourage faculty and students to engage in open dialogue about the role of AI in education. This approach supports our mission to empower individuals by providing them the flexibility to explore AI's potential in ways that align with their educational goals.
Privacy and Ethical Considerations
We urge everyone to be mindful of privacy and ethical implications when using AI. We recognize the complicated landscape of AI tools, many of which mine and share or sell user data and are themselves trained on datasets of questionable integrity. At the same time, we also recognize that fluency with AI tools is a growing competency sought by employers and an area of professional development across many industries. As part of our mission to help our students and communities prosper, it is essential to understand both the opportunities and challenges of AI, considering its impact on personal data and the broader community.
Ongoing Efforts and Support
Our AI Task Force is actively working to understand how AI affects our institution and to develop guidelines that align with our mission to empower students and communities to achieve, succeed, and prosper. We are committed to supporting our community as we navigate these changes together, ensuring that the integration of AI into our academic environment is thoughtful, ethical, and beneficial to all.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we strive to make informed decisions about AI use at College of Southern Nevada.
