Regents' Awards

The NSHE Nevada Regents’ Awards recognizes faculty, staff, and students who have demonstrated significant accomplishments in the areas of academic advising, teaching, creative activities, and student academic leadership.

In order for faculty and staff to be considered for a Regents' award, candidates must be full-time and have at least (5) five years of cumulative service within NSHE by the date of nomination.

Nominees for the Sam Lieberman Award for Student Scholarship must be enrolled at CSN with no fewer than (9) nine undergraduate credits and have completed no fewer than (30) credits at CSN by the time the award is granted in March.

Nominees who are selected by the IRC and approved by the CSN President are only recommendations to the Board of Regents. The Board of Regents will have final approval and vote on awardees during their March Board meeting. This means that while CSN may have selected a nominee, an employee from another institution may be chosen over our selection.

The selected nominees for each category will receive an award in the amount of $5,000.

Nomination Packets: All nomination materials must be submitted via email to Jenn Daughtery at jennifer.daughtery@csn.edu. Incomplete nominations will be returned to the nominator.

Sam Lieberman Regents’ Award for Student Scholarship nominations are due 11:59pm on Friday, November 6, 2026.


REGENTS' AWARD CATEGORIES

The Nevada Regents’ Academic Advisor Award is given annually to NSHE faculty and staff members with distinguished records of student advisement. One award will be granted to a full-time community college member of the faculty, professional staff, or classified staff who provide undergraduate academic advisement as part of their regular or primary assignment.

Although this award is intended for an individual, a group who by their collaboration have made outstanding contributions in academic advisement may be recognized as well. NSHE institutions may only submit one nomination for consideration.

Candidates must have at least five (5) years of cumulative service in NSHE. Award amount is $5,000.00.

Each nomination must contain the following information only:

Formal letter of nomination from an NSHE employee or student, adhering to the following guidelines:

  • The nomination letter must address how the candidate accomplished a significant record of excellence going above and beyond in student advising that is worthy of recognition by the Board of Regents.
  • The letter must clearly detail evidence and outcomes of the following:
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students
  • Effective advising: it must provide clear details of the nominee’s strategy and advising methods, and materials and tools developed by the nominee to support their success
  • The candidate’s advising philosophy and what sets them apart from other advisors
  • Details of the nominee’s committee work or other service to CSN and/or NSHE as it relates to advising

Supplemental materials as follows:

  • No more than (3) three examples of materials or tools that the nominee developed and implemented in their advising practices, or data, metric, or feedback that show success as an advisor
  • No more than (3) three letters of support on letterhead from individuals knowledgeable of the nominee’s qualifications that provide specific details or examples of accomplishments and quality of work rather than just generalized comments and praise
  • Nominee’s Advising Philosophy Statement that explains nominee’s theories and core values used as the foundation of their advising practice. It should also include intentions and goals and how impact is measured. Key questions to answer in the Philosophy Statement are:
    • Why are you and academic advisor?
    • What approach do you take to advise; what theories do you employ?
    • What impact do you hope to have on students?
    • What sets you apart from other academic advisors?
    • How does your work as an advisor help to fulfill CSN’s mission and goals?
    • How do you know you have made a difference?

One-half page Biography – on CSN letterhead and written in third person. Include information about yourself and your scholarly and advising achievements.

All nominations will be scored utilizing the following Rubric Regents' Academic Advisor Award.

The Nevada Regents’ Award for Creative Activities is given annually to one full-time NSHE faculty members with a distinguished record in creative activity from a community college and who have at least five (5) years of cumulative service. 

Although this award is intended for individuals, groups who by their collaboration have made major advances may be recognized as well. Award amount is $5,000.00.

Each nomination must contain the following information only:

Formal letter of nomination from an NSHE employee or student on letterhead, adhering to the following guidelines: 

  • Must indicate the significance, volume, and quality of the candidate’s creative activity in such a way as to clarify the nominee’s activities for individuals from other disciplines.
  • Must provide clear details of the national and/or international stature of the candidate’s creative activity. These details should reflect recognized evaluation in the form of critically reviewed presentations, books, and other forms of recognition (e.g., invited presentations, juried exhibitions, awards, honors). A fuller listing of these should be provided in the nominee’s curriculum vitae.
  • Must address the candidate’s continuous record of long-term creative activity.

Curriculum vitae containing nominee’ information, personal statement and objective as it relates to creativity, education, work, projects, volunteer activities, presentations, awards, and honors. It should be organized, easy to read, and visually aesthetic.

Supplementary materials as follows:

  • No more than (3) three examples of a scholarly, creative product (e.g., music CD, art slides, videotape, audiotape, work of fiction or non-fiction, piece of artwork, etc.). Works cannot be items that were co-authored or in collaboration unless co-author/collaborator is included in the nomination.
  • No more than (3) three reviews, adjudications, or testimonials conferred by individuals who audited the original works as provided in the section above.
  • No more than (3) three letters of support on letterhead from individuals knowledgeable of the nominee’s qualifications and that which provide specific details or examples of creative works rather than just generalized comments and praise
  • Names, addresses, and phone numbers of (5) five individuals outside of the NSHE whom the Selection Committee may contact about the candidate’s creative achievements. References cannot have been previously employed by NSHE and cannot be the nominee’s PhD advisor or advisee.

All nominations will be scored utilizing the following Rubric Regents' Creative Activities Award.

The Nevada Regents’ Teaching Award is given annually to faculty members with distinguished records of teaching. Two awards shall be granted to full-time faculty at an NSHE community college:

  • (1) one full-time faculty who is tenured or tenure track, who provide instruction as their primary assignment and
  • (1) one full-time faculty who is not tenured or tenure track (market hire), who provide instruction as their primary assignment are eligible for one award.

Although these awards are intended for individuals, groups who by their collaboration have made outstanding instructional contributions may be recognized as well. Nominees must have at least five (5) years of cumulative service in NSHE. Award amount is $5,000.00 each.

Each nomination must contain the following information only:

Formal letter of nomination from an NSHE employee or student, adhering to the following guidelines: 

  • The nomination letter must address how the candidate accomplished a significant record of excellence in teaching that brought recognition to CSN.
  • The letter must provide clear evidence of the candidate’s ability to communicate effectively with students, impart knowledge, and/or develop skills in a manner that excites students’ interest in the subject matter as well as students’ interest in furthering their educational goals.
  • The letter must provide clear evidence of the candidate’s enthusiasm for assessing, revising, and updating instructional methods, materials and technologies in an effort to create ongoing participatory/active learning in the classroom and move the state of instruction in their field to a new level or in new directions; and a recurring effort to create learning tasks (assignments, exercises, and/or exams) that encourage critical thinking/reasoning skills.
  • The letter must provide clear evidence of the candidate’s eagerness to be accessible to all students and to provide students with accurate advisement and appropriate referrals to other campus departments or NSHE institutions.

Curriculum vitae containing contact information, a teaching statement related to employee’s teaching philosophy and objective, a professional summary, education, certifications, work experience, awards, and honors. It should be organized, easy to read, and visually aesthetic.

Supplementary materials as follows: 

  • No more than (3) three recent self-evaluations and/or evaluations by the candidate’s supervisor or dean.
  • A summary of student teaching evaluations for no more than (3) three classes.
  • No more than (3) three examples (reprints or copies) of significant works that the candidate feels are representative of their teaching accomplishments. Examples to include, but are not limited to, course outlines/syllabi, samples of course handouts, exercises the candidate has developed, distance education materials, video/audio created by the candidate, and samples of exams.
  • No more than (3) three letters of support from individuals knowledgeable of the nominee’s excellence in teaching and their impact on student learning.
  • Names and addresses of up to (5) five individuals, including students, whom the Selection Committee may contact regarding the candidate’s effectiveness, achievements, or abilities as a teacher.

All nominations will be scored utilizing the following Rubric for Regents' Teaching Award.

The Nevada Regents’ Scholar Award is given annually to one undergraduate CSN student. The award granted shall be referred to as the "Sam Lieberman Regents' Award for Student Scholarship" in commemoration of Sam Lieberman’s service and dedication to higher education in Nevada.

The award is based upon distinguished academic accomplishments, leadership ability, and service contributions while being a registered CSN student, as well as the recipient’s potential for continued success. Award amount is $5,000.00.

Eligibility: 

  • Nominees must currently be enrolled in no fewer than (9) nine undergraduate credits in the semester in which they are nominated.
  • Nominees must have completed no fewer than (30) credit hours at the community college level by the time the award is granted (usually in March).
  • Leadership and service accomplishments must have occurred while the nominee was a registered NSHE student.

Each nomination must contain the following information only:

  • Formal letter of nomination from a full-time CSN employee which demonstrates the nominees’ academic and leadership abilities
    • Letter must address how the nominee has achieved a significant record of academic excellence while a registered NSHE student and provides evidence of the nominee going above and beyond to expand their student experience. It must provide evidence of the nominee's academic accomplishments, acknowledgments, awards, scholarly activities, research, potential for continued success, and other academic recognition, etc.
    • Letter must provide evidence of remarkable and distinctive leadership qualities and attributes such as mentoring or tutoring other students, working on projects with instructors outside of classroom time, assisting staff with community activities such as college fairs/parades, community outreach and/or recruitment, CSN tours, CSN events, student competitions/showcases, leadership roles, etc.
  • NSHE Regents' Scholar Nomination Form
  • Half-page biography in third person and printed on CSN letterhead and,

Supplemental materials as follows: 

  • Student Scholarship Resume that highlights the following:
    • National, international, state, regional, professional and/or community-wide award or recognition. For example, President’s or Dean’s List, Outstanding Student Award, Honor Society, Women of Influence, state, city, county, or national conference attendee or participant, and/or other contests or scholarship honors.
    • CSN Leadership achievements such as Chair, Co-Chair, President, Vice President, Senator, Secretary, lead of a CSN organization, club, project, or participant or attendee of a state, city, regional, national conference related to CSN.
    • Non-CSN Leadership achievements such as Chair, Co-Chair, President, Vice President, Senator, Secretary, lead of a non-CSN organization, club, project, or participant or attendee of a state, city, regional, national conference not related to CSN.
    • Work and volunteer Experience, specifically full-time and part-time work while registered as an NSHE student and taking courses.
  • Most current CSN Transcripts; unofficial transcript is acceptable
  • Personal Statement that provides a snapshot of the nominee which includes their aspirations, motivations, and perspectives on their scholarly and service activities. Statement should answer the following questions:
    • 1. How does the student assess their experience at CSN both academically and personally?
    • 2. How has the student’s experience at CSN prepared them for achieving their goals?
