Do I need to be a student at CSN to receive tutoring?
Yes, you must be currently enrolled at CSN to receive tutoring, or have an NSHE ID to receive assistance for placement exam preparation.
If I am a student at Nevada State College or UNLV, can I receive tutoring at CSN?
Only currently enrolled CSN students can receive tutoring.
Are there tutors available for all classes offered at CSN?
The majority of academic classes has tutoring available; however, please check with any of our offices and we will inform you as to subject availability.
Do I have to get tutoring at the same campus where I am taking the class?
You can receive tutoring at any of our three campuses, providing a tutor is available.
How many hours of tutoring can I receive?
CSN students can receive free, unlimited drop-in tutoring and 3 hours per week of one-on-one appointment based tutoring for the classes they are enrolled in providing a tutor is available.
Can I receive tutoring for more than one subject
Yes, you can receive tutoring for all the classes you are currently enrolled in, providing a tutor is available.
How do I register for one-on-one tutoring?
You must register online at mywco.com/csntutoring. After registering you will receive an e-mail confirming your registration. Clink on the link provided in the e-mail and your registration to complete your registration.
I am auditing a class; can I still receive tutoring?
Yes, you may receive tutoring but priority is given to students on a grade track.
How long is a one-on-one tutoring session?
A one-on-one tutoring session is one hour. If a tutor is available and you have remaining time for the week, you may be able to extend your session.
Can the tutor do my homework?
The tutor may only assist you in similar problems or make suggestions only.
Can the tutor help me with a take home test?
Unless the instructor has given Centers for Academic Success permission, the tutor cannot help with tests.
How do the drop-in tutoring centers work?
There are various walk-in labs for academic support on each campus (Math, Science, Reading, Writing, and Communication). This is a good place to do homework because there are tutors available to answer questions as they come up.
What Math levels are covered in the Math Resource Center?
Generally up to and including Math 181.Each Resource Center has slightly different tutor content concentrations. You may call the campus to find out if they have a tutor in the area you are interested.
What Science levels are covered in the Science Resource Center?
Generally there will be some Biology, Chemistry, Physics & other sciences available. Each Resource Center has slightly different tutor content concentrations.You may call the campus to find out if they have a tutor in the area you are interested.
Do I have to be a currently enrolled student at CSN to use the walk-in tutoring labs or centers?
You must be a currently enrolled student at CSN to use the CSN tutoring labs or centers.
Can I get tutoring after my class finals?
Tutoring ends after your class final.
Can I tutor with a friend?
Normally, a tutoring session is one on one. Contact the desk with specific questions.
Can I be prohibited from receiving tutoring?
You can be prohibited from receiving tutoring if you fail to abide by the policies (e.g., No Show Policy) or The Student Code of Conduct.
What kind of experience do the tutors have?
Some tutors are retired professionals; others are working in their field & tutoring part-time. A great majority are students who are academically excellent.All tutors are approved by their appropriate academic department and all tutors receive training in tutoring skills and most are CRLA certified - (College Reading and Learning Association - http://www.crla.net/)
Does tutoring provide textbooks & other materials?
You must bring your own textbook, notes & appropriate instructional tools (calculator, etc.)
I am a disabled student, can I receive accommodations?
Yes; however, you must be registered with the CSN Disability Resource Center.
Can the tutor meet me off campus?
Tutoring must take place on a CSN campus in the tutoring room.
Can I make appointments with the tutor directly?
You must make appointments in person, on the phone with the staff, or online at: www.mywco.com/csntutoring.
Can I ask for the tutor’s phone number?
You must contact the staff and the staff will contact the tutor on your behalf.
Can I request a bilingual tutor?
Yes, if one is available with content expertise, however, appointments are on a first come, first serve basis.
Will I see the same tutor for the whole semester?
Appointments are on a first come, first serve basis.If your tutor is available you can schedule with him/her.
Can I select my tutor?
Yes; but we cannot guarantee availability. You may also change tutors.
Can I get help for a written assignment if there is not a tutor in that subject?
Yes, tutors can assist with the paper but not the class content if they have not been approved to tutor in that subject.Generally, we will refer you to the CSN Writing Center or Smarthinking.com.
Do you have online tutoring available?
CSN has online tutoring available through Smarthinking accessed through Canvas. We do not manage this service, but it is free to all CSN students.
Do you have a tutor for Continuing Education or GED testing?
At this time we do not have tutoring available for Continuing Education or GED testing.
How do I become a tutor?
Contact the Centers for Academic Success staff at any campus for instructions for applying or access the online application and bring to one of our offices.
