Academic Assessment Policy
Purpose of the Academic Assessment Policy
  1. This policy provides a procedure for academic assessment, defined in this policy as the systematic process of gathering, interpreting, and acting upon data related to student learning for the purposes of course, program, and institutional improvement. The policy’s purpose is to establish processes to better understand what students are learning and how well they are prepared for their chosen professions, and to ensure that students who complete CSN degrees possess a common set of skills and dispositions characteristic of well-rounded, productive citizens.
  2. For faculty participating in academic assessment, the results of any assessment project may indicate opportunities to hone their skillsets, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.
  3. This policy represents CSN’s commitment to achieving the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities assessment standards, especially that “The institution documents, through an effective, regular, and comprehensive system of assessment of student achievement, that students who complete its educational courses, programs, and degrees, wherever offered and however delivered, achieve identified course, program, and degree learning outcomes” (NWCCU Standard 4.A.3).

This policy provides professional and ethical guidelines for the selection and adoption of physical or electronic textbooks or other instructional materials for CSN courses to minimize costs to students without compromising academic standards and academic freedom.

Transfer Policy
Purpose of the Transfer Policy

The College of Southern Nevada is committed to affirmative action and equal opportunity in employment and access to its programs and activities. The college, through responsible managers, shall recruit, hire, upgrade, train, and promote in all job titles.

The Executive Director of Human Resources is responsible for developing and implementing programs and monitoring the CSN's progress towards meeting its goal. He/she shall inform all members of the CSN's professional staff of those vacant or new positions which, consistent with the CSN's affirmative action plan, may be filled by the transfer of faculty from one position to another. No transfer, temporary or permanent, shall be made without such notification. While the CSN has the contractual right to involuntarily transfer administrative faculty, it prefers not to use this method of filling a vacant or new position.

This policy informs the CSN community regarding the permissibility of animals on campus. This policy is intended to safeguard institutional information, support business continuity and decision-making, promote transparency and efficient records management, preserve records of historical or archival value, protect confidential information, and ensure records are retained and disposed of in accordance with approved retention schedules.

  1. The purpose of this policy is to establish identification verification processes through which a student who registers in any course offered via distance education or correspondence (CoyoteFlex, Hybrid, Web Online or Web Remote courses) is the same student who academically engages in the course or program.
  2. This policy is also designed to achieve the following outcomes:
    1. Work in conjunction with the CSN Academic Integrity Policy,
    2. Confirm identification of Web Remote or online students,
    3. Confirm identification of all users of the online learning management system (LMS) (e.g., Canvas),
    4. Maintain FERPA standards of privacy for students affected by this policy.

Purpose of the Administrative Faculty Evaluation Policy

The purpose of the annual performance evaluation of the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) Administrative Faculty, as required by Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) policy, is to provide constructive and developmental feedback to the Administrative Faculty.

This policy is intended to meet the institution's responsibilities under Titles VI and VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, the Age Discrimination Act of 1975, the Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008, the Violence Against Women Act, the Nevada Pregnant Workers Act, and Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Handbook, Title 4, Chapter 8.

Academic Honors Policy
Purpose of the Academic Honors Policy

The College of Southern Nevada supports and recognizes student achievement. An Academic Honors List identifies and recognizes students who demonstrate academic excellence. In addition to being identified as an honoree, a notation "Academic Honors" will post to the student's transcript for the qualified semester.

Student Code of Conduct Policy [NSHE]
Purpose of the Student Code of Conduct Policy

The purpose of this policy is to provide the rules of conduct and procedures applicable to CSN students as established in the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents Handbook, Title 2, Chapter 10, “Rules of Conduct and Procedures for Students of the Nevada System of Higher Education.” It defines prohibited conduct and the processes for resolving allegations and imposing appropriate sanctions.

This policy lists the reasons for a student to appeal a grade and the process to make a decision on the appeal.

Tuition Refund Policy [NSHE]
Purpose of the Tuition Refund Policy

To establish and communicate the College of Southern Nevada’s requirements and procedures for the refund of registration fees, nonresident tuition, course fees, and other applicable student charges in accordance with policies approved by the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents. The policy is intended to ensure refunds are administered consistently, equitably, and in compliance with applicable NSHE, federal financial aid, and veterans’ education requirements.

Unregistered Persons in Class
Purpose of the Unregistered Persons in Class

Numerous problems can be created when someone who is not registered for that class attends. This applies to physical or virtual classroom sessions. While there may be limited exceptions, such as special guests invited by the instructor, having only those who are registered in the class will reduce the potential for problems to arise.
